It apparently keeps people who might not otherwise become involved with the university invested with the success of the university. Of coarse, this only works if the athletic program is turning a profit rather than a net loss for the university.

or those families who donate that kind of money are simply looking for a public legacy of "caring" or some other liberal tripe. Regardless, sports should be at the very bottom of priorities for an Educational institution.
