Some middle-class Americans worry Trump health subsidies cut will hurt

PHILADELPHIA - Tom Westerman voted for Donald Trump in last year’s election but says he might not do so again after the president cut off billions of dollars in Obamacare subsidies to health insurance companies.

Westerman’s change of heart reflects mounting fears among middle-class Democrats and Republicans that their health insurance costs will soar as Trump weakens former President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law, which extended insurance to more than 20 million Americans.

“It seems like he is trying to hurt the middle class,” said Westerman, who is retired from a manufacturing company in Pennsylvania, a state that Trump won.

Some people said they were encouraged to see Trump deliver on a campaign promise to dismantle Obamacare, after repeated failures by congressional Republicans to repeal the 2010 law.

“I support the president because I think Obamacare is imploding and it not only impacts those on Obamacare, but everybody,” said Roger Heuring, 58, who lives in New Jersey.

“Forget the president – it’s the Congress’s responsibility. They’re the ones that passed this mess to begin with,” Heuring said.

In addition to cutting subsidies, Trump signed an executive order last week that could eventually make it easier for Americans to buy cheaper, bare-bones health insurance plans than required by Obamacare.

Trump voter Stephen Lewis, 62, lost his job as a veterinarian in Wisconsin and bought a health insurance plan under Obamacare. Lewis still supports Trump although he said he fears that his premiums, now $309 a month, could rise further with the subsidy cut, making it harder for him to meet other expenses, including $611 in monthly mortgage payments.

“It is a concern obviously,” Lewis said.

Reagan used to call them “The Poor Sucker from South Succotash.” The one guy claiming to be hurt by a policy decision, turned-up after the media went out and turned over every rock looking for him.

All I’m saying is I don’t like people who whine when their ILLEGAL payoffs are stopped. ILLEGAL payoffs set up by Democrats. Obamacare is an abomination and there was no way it could ever work. Obama illegally paid these subsidies to insurance companies. The money was never authorized or appropriated by Congress where spending bills start (actually, they start on K Street).

It’s the worst of the worst to have people sobbing and gnashing teeth that their ILLEGAL subsidies are being cut off.

For sure the media looked for a guy who would fit their story but there are also a lot of people who are not complainers who are in desperate straits through no fault of their own. It is for the benefit of those people that I can see the value in a short run market stabilization while the Republicans can put together an alternative that benefits everybody. And in the long run, the biggest element that benefits everybody is stimulation of the supply side.

That’s what I told friends who were shocked at what he said. They’re not inviting him to dinner! Churchill wasn’t real classy either, but look what he did for all of western civilization.

I believe the cost savings reduction premium is to remain the same, even though insurance companies are no longer getting the subsidy. Therefore the tax credits will still be issued. Insurance companies are going to have to raise rates on everybody else to cover the cost.

I think those that wanted Obamacare were excited because they thought they were getting free medical. So a premium of $309 a month seems excessive to them.

However the story doesn’t ring true. And I know people lose jobs all the time, but veterinarians make very good money. And have to be extremely intelligent and work hard to make it through veterinary school, which I hear is harder to get into than medical school. This guy has to realize that $300 a month is nothing for medical insurance.

These people these articles find out of the woodwork remind me of the stories about illegal aliens when Bush’s (the traitor, IMO) amnesty was considered. There were stories of illegal aliens that were doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, biologist, you name it. It’s in how they couldn’t find work in their homeland. And they had to scurry across our border, where of course their licenses would be invalid to practice their supposed profession here.

It’s all reeks of fabrication.

A young woman who grew up across the street wanted to be a vet and got turned down at UC Davis. So, she became an excellent dentist and raises through bred dogs and does 99% of their care. She jokes about not getting admitted to the Vet program and was still smart enough to become a dentist.
