Seeking a real patch for ObamaCare’s latest mess
NY Post ^ | October 13, 2017 | Post Editorial Board

President Trump was right to call ObamaCare “a total mess” Friday, even as he added to the immediate mess by ending illegal payouts to health insurers.

The Affordable Care Act ordered insurers to make special provisions to reduce co-pays and other out-of-pocket costs for lower-income ObamaCare enrollees. The law said the feds would repay the companies for these subsidies — but left it to Congress to actually appropriate those funds.

Congress then turned Republican (in good part thanks to outrage over the ACA) and refused to OK the payments.

But then-President Barack Obama sent the checks anyway. That was blatantly unconstitutional, and the courts had already ruled as much when Trump won the White House.

The new prez kept up the payments to minimize disruptions in the run-up to full ObamaCare replacement. But with repeal stalled, he couldn’t justify ignoring the Constitution.

Irony No. 1: This will likely increase what the feds shell out. To make up for this loss, insurers will have to raise ObamaCare premiums — but federal payouts to anyone who qualifies for subsidies under the ACA automatically rise to cover that hit. For technical reasons, that’s expected to boost Uncle Sam’s net costs.

Irony No. 2: The main losers from the move will be GOP-leaning voters, because people who don’t qualify for subsidies won’t get protected from the premium hikes.

Of course, these folks are already paying through the nose for coverage that’s often worse than what they used to have. Some of them may use the escape hatch that Trump reopened on Thursday, by reversing last year’s Obama ruling that low-cost, bare-bones alternative health policies can only run for three months.

The most rotten piece of legislation in American history and we can't figure out a way to get it repealed. What a sad state of affairs.

Correct me if I’m wrong...but wasn’t the whole original intent of the construction of this....was simply to jump-start the program with federal money and force the states into it’s own taxation schemes to keep the pyramid-scheme afloat? I remember this topic coming up in 2010, and several economic experts were already predicting the day when states realized how deep they were to be anchored into this.

I’ll also point this out. The states with the highest rates of welfare (California and New York)...are the states with serious financial issues and a large Democratic voting pattern. To keep their programs running...each would have to go and pass massive tax programs upon the middle-class. They would have to react within the next six to eight months to avoid the doubling of rates for the summer period of 2018...which means angering the public greatly and affecting the election results for both in November 2019.

Nothing reveals a bad law like its full implementation.

No the original intent was to force the country into nationalized health care by adding so many people with a sense of entitlement to the rolls, subsidized by the government, that once you tried to take those subsidies away the cries of the howling mob would be so loud we would have no choice but to keep it.

Of course, the Former Occupant of the Oval Orifice, 2009-2017, could just agree to quietly go into exile, say Indonesia or even Syria, if he wishes a less turbulent and chaotic life. Running his “shadow government” (with George Soros backing) is clearly not in the best interests of the United States of America, and so long as he remains in this country, there shall always be a small nucleus of a new cancer to grow back the cult of progressivism.

People need to face the reality of the level of taxation required to fund national health care

Then once they swallow that, the next great lesson is the reality of rationed care and govt bureaucrats making your medical decisions and those of your family

Going forward - that remains the intent. The rat-leaders in congress are waiting for the public to cry “Uncle”.

The unconstitutional law has much criminal protections than it has to do with healthcare. It has weaved into it tentacles that prevent anyone from removing it

The term "ObamaCare" is being shoved down the memory hole and replaced with "ACA" so blame may be attributed to the Pubbies and not the DemonRatz.

I hates Ratz!

Same here. I get to pay taxes to subsidize others, then pay full price for my own policy.
And since the subsidies are based on earned income, there are multimillionaires getting subsidies by keeping their income low and living off other accounts.
