There was a book written in 1990s Germany that was an attempt to psychoanalytically determine why Hitler did what he did. The government suppressed the book’s publication for years on the assumption that to understand all was to forgive all.

That is curious.

I recall a quotation, “In order to understand the past you must first forgive it”. The irony is that it is a Jewish quotation.
