The gunman who unleashed hundreds of rounds of gunfire on a crowd of concertgoers in Las Vegas had two bump-stocks that could have converted semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic ones, officials said.
The devices have attracted scrutiny in recent years from authorities.
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has long railed against them. Several years ago, she told The Associated Press she was concerned about the emergence of new technologies that could retrofit firearms to make them fully automatic.
This replacement shoulder stock turns a semi-automatic rifle into a weapon that can fire at a rate of 400 to 800 rounds per minute, she said.
A semi-automatic weapon requires one trigger pull for each round fired. With a fully automatic firearm, one trigger pull can unleash continuous rounds until the magazine is empty.

This is what I expected that they would find that the shooter was using because these bump-fire stocks aren't that expensive and do not require any special permits or background checks.
You can bump fire just fine without a device.
and since he was firing into a crowd randomly, aim wasn’t important
But you can do it quite a bit easier with a bump fire stock.

Does a bump stock change the sound? Some of us thought we heard an M-60 the other night.
Fair enough.
But it isn't totally unimportant. No, you don't have to aim at a specific person. BUT, having fired bump fire rifles I do know the barrel goes all over the place, mostly up. At a distance of 400 yards if the barrel rises 8 to 10 inches (very common) the bullets could easily go over the heads of the crowd. Also, jamming is fairly common with bump fire and would be more so with the drum mags he would have had to have been using. What I heard in the videos was sustained automatic fire. Sounded more like a belt fed weapon than anything else.
From what I heard in the videos, it was full auto fire.
“The devices have attracted scrutiny in recent years from authorities.”
Actually this was one of the issues ATF had with David Koresh and Branch Davidians around 1993.
I tried it with a stock M1 Garand by hooking my thumb in my belt loop and adjusting the trigger finger pressure as I shot from the waist and could almost do it, so it seemed possible to me.
Echos.
The lower frequency sounds start a little after the firing starts and end a little after the higher frequency sounds stop.
Not to escalate conspiracy but it did have that M60 sound didn’t it? This whole thing has an unreasonable look to it. I know it does not take much to pull a trigger but it requires thought to assemble the weaponry and adequate ammunition and clips. The creep apparently had no or very little experience. It could be done. Of course the big question is why?
That’s probably why he had so many weapons. He anticipated barrels heating up and jams.
Thanks for the vid link—had not heard of a bump stock before.
Now I can understand what it is, and how it works.
Listen to the audio on this video captured by a taxi driver at Mandalay Bay when the shooting started.

Bump fire or full auto are both of little practical value unless it is a “spray and pray” situation with a packed crowd, as this was.
He was firing into an area of 290,000+ square feet from a distance of 700 to 1400 feet.
