The word "dead" goes with "shoot", as in "shoot dead". They shot dead a knife attacker.

Gee, thanks for enlightening me. However, I am a professional writer AND I was educated in the 1940-1950's, i.e., when they were actually teaching things, like English. ;)
And we knew what tongue in cheek was/is. (Or maybe you just needed another cuppa coffee?)
