Speaking Ill of Hugh Hefner
NY Times ^ | 30 Sep 2017 | Ross Douthat

Posted on 09/30/2017 9:11:16 PM PDT by Rummyfan

Hugh Hefner, gone to his reward at the age of 91, was a pornographer and chauvinist who got rich on masturbation, consumerism and the exploitation of women, aged into a leering grotesque in a captain’s hat, and died a pack rat in a decaying manse where porn blared during his pathetic orgies.

Hef was the grinning pimp of the sexual revolution, with quaaludes for the ladies and Viagra for himself — a father of smut addictions and eating disorders, abortions and divorce and syphilis, a pretentious huckster who published Updike stories no one read while doing flesh procurement for celebrities, a revolutionary whose revolution chiefly benefited men much like himself.

The arc of his life vindicated his moral critics, conservative and feminist: What began with talk of jazz and Picasso and other signifiers of good taste ended in a sleazy decrepitude that would have been pitiable if it wasn’t still so exploitative.

Well, you can't say he's in a better place...

Glad you pointed this out. This is one of those tired cliches people feel obligated to say, but it is without understanding.

Hefner was like the rich man in Luke (16:23,24). After he died, he immediately lift up his eyes in Hell (Haides) tormented in flame. There is no happy ending for the unsaved dead. This is the fate of not only the Hugh Hefners of the world, but of all unbelieving.

But it doesn't have to be this way. For it is God's desire that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all.

The social liberalism he championed was the rotten and self-interested sort, a liberalism of male and upper-class privilege, in which the strong and beautiful and rich take their pleasure at the expense of the vulnerable and poor and not-yet-born.

Very well stated! The Playboy mentality that Hefner and Hefner-wannabes developed and sold to society as "freedom" has nothing good or positive to contribute. It boils down to hedonism and the only ones enjoying their sin for a season are those who haven't reaped what they have sown yet.

Wow, I didn’t realize Ross had it in him.
Well, his last name *is* pronounced "do that".

Dennis Prager asked this question on his Happiness Hour (Friday at 10 am PST) this week. Does hedonism bring happiness? I didn’t hear the whole hour, but he basically proved it does not.

Religions welcome sex. But sex is between the right people at the right times. And that makes it deeper and more meaningful, and more joyful. I’m sure Hefner felt that if sex wasn’t nasty, disgusting, and made you both embarrassed and lie about it, you’re doing it wrong.

Actually, I wish I could have sown a whole lot more. Then maybe there’d be a little more reaping.

I read somewhere that he got so used to women he had to watch gay porn to become aroused in his later years.

Yeah, I'm sure that happened...

"Sex with so many hot women turned me into a homo!"

Good grief...

Bingo my friend....He profited on plain human behavior...just like any successful business person or religious leader. Demand and supply...American as Apple Pie.

Would you also admire the drug dealers, the kiddy porn producers, the sexual slavery of children? Demand and supply, right? Can you name one positive that Hefner brought to the world that didn't negatively cost someone else in some way?

Douthat has to kick Trump. Disgusting.

Trump has not been a saint, but he’s no more another Hefner than he is another Hitler.

He figured out that men like to look at beautiful nude women. Not rocket science.

And for displaying to the world Marilyn Monroe's tits, the Lord cursed Hugh Hefner with a long life, great wealth, and so endless hot poon.

And now he's burning for eternity in the fiery pits of hell, or something like that.

Oh please. He sells a magazine showcasing beautiful naked women and they talk about him like he destroyed the world and commited genocide.

Get over yourselves. It’s just pictures of females and they have existed since man rubbed stones on cave walls.

The “sexual revolution” was a natural result of the pill and advanced medicine. Nothing more. And nothing short of blocking medical progress could have stopped it

Actually, I wish I could have sown a whole lot more. Then maybe there’d be a little more reaping.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (Galatians 6:7-10)

ugh..You’re asking me to do homework now boatbums. It’s late. I’ll close with Hef gave you the ammo to continue your ability to stand on your bully pulpit and defend your narrow situational unawareness. Go nuts and keep fighting your good fight.

The Constitution and its amendments let us do this sh*t. Ain’t it awesome???

The NY Times did a full column on him in 1964 and advertised for him.

I didn’t hate Hefner as much as Ross does, but I never understood why anyone admired him.

But as a part of the NY Times he had to end with a jab at Trump. I guess if he didn’t do that he would be considered a traitor.

Trump is no Hugh Hefner.

As for Hefner, he was all those things in the article but one more thing I’ve always perplexing. How does a man go through an entire life and not love? Surely, he never did because he was able to toss off all his wives and go on and on and on to other women without looking back.
