Dont know what exactly Hefner was thinking when he consented to that.
A degree in psychology and art and whatever pop sociology hed picked up over the years against Buckley...
It’s a very interesting interview. Thank you for posting.
Human pride was likely the reason Hugh chose to grant the interview.
HH was no doubt swimming in money by that time. Playboy had been around for 12 years and his popularity, fame, and notoriety no doubt made him think he was able to defeat anyone who challenged his way of life.
Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall...
I don’t know if Hef *ever* did a serious interview after that; he might have done a 60 Minutes one...but by that time, the mainstream media drooled over him instead of looking at him with a jaundiced eye.
I saw him once on David Letterman...the old NBC show Letterman had. DL was in awe, you could tell it would be nothing but softballs....
I think eventually even the “women’s lib” or “feminists” began to buy into Hef’s lie about “The Good Life”.
I shudder to think of the instant after Hefner died...
Would love to see that interview.....hmmm...
I do think one redeeming quality of that magazine was the interviews. Very interesting ones. I remember Jimmy Carter did one.
Still had enough control of his faculties to play backgammon at 91.
21 minutes in, Buckley schools Hef on the truth that ‘the separation of church and state’ wasn’t in the original Constitution but was an invention of a Supreme Court a few years earlier. LOL.
"I've committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something God recognizes I will do -- and I have done it -- and God forgives me for it."
And Ford still lost...
Beautifully, Buckley interrupts him and says, "Excuse me, how the HELL do you know?"
Buckley was great.
He went on 'Dick Cavett' in color with some feminists.
And was actually surprised about how they lit into him.
Buckley also points out that “merely because you have an appetite is not an excuse for giving in to it and I understand the Playboy philosophy is saying it is a, would lead to a kind of a neurotic repression...at which point Hef says, “Freud said that!” and then Buckley points out, “Well,no he didn’t exactly” but that “in the first place he was a very orthodox monogamist, what Freud said was understand what you are doing to yourself” to which Hef then changes the subject and ignores the statement.
Hef begins to see the trap. Hef appears to get a bit irritated, knowing he is now unable to justify his so-called ideals and yet maintain an apparently arbitrary, stifling rule.
It gets worse as WFB asks HH if legalized brothels would be a business outlet for Playboy. When Hef says no, WFB wonders how it would be antithetical to the Playboy Philosophy.
Great stuff - I miss him.
thanks. didn’t know that.
Great part about 33:20 in, HH cites an Indiana University professor “Gephardt” who, Hef, says, claims we will see a decline in homosexual behavior when we release the heterosexuals to be more free with their behavior.
Hugh Hefner, iow, seems to be railing in this interview about the need to stop homosexual behavior.
34:00 minutes in, HH says if you have a more restrictive heterosexual society you will have more “perversion”—referring to the previous citation regarding homosexuality.
Oh, Hef....I wonder if any of your dear applauding celebrity friends this week know about this interview.
