>> “There was only one way to help the initially small ground forces against a tank attack of that magnitude,” <<
Yes, that’s true, but Dayan and his handful of tanks didn’t do it; Yehova’s Watchers were the deciding factor.
That was the testamony of the Syrian troops, who to a man insist that they faced an insurmountable army of God’s angels..
The Israeli nuclear capability has been described as “one wire disconnected” — IOW, they’ve got it stashed in case of an existential crisis, and will use it against their none-too-neighborly neighbors only if Israel is on the brink of destruction. Reportedly, Dayan went to Meir during that first dark day and said, “the Third Temple is ending.” She gave the order to make the strike, not bad for an ex-schoolteacher from Wisconsin. The bombs were actually loaded on the planes and ready to launch when, in one of those nicks of time sorts of things, the course of the war was turned by the relentless valor of the Israeli armed forces and mobilization of the reserves, and the planes were held on the ground.
See? The Jews really were behind 9-11. /jk
Heh... I wasn’t a Nixon fan back then, but the drumbeat against him on the covers of Time and Newsweek was constant for over a year, the Watergate Hearings were on every weekday, the flood of books was amazing, and of course, I was young and gullible as many of us have been at that young age.
The licking that the Demwits took in 1972 was entirely due to the non-viability of McGovern at the top of their ticket, and emphatically not due to the failed break-in. The fact that Nixon thought that going lawless about that was necessary is puzzling in the extreme, until one realizes that the cooked-books polls (which were already taking over in the media) showed him getting beaten badly early in the campaign. He was a cunning and intelligent President, but as a human being he had, ahem, some issues. He was obviously wrong to order it, and stupid to have a taping system of any kind (before him, JFK, LBJ had such a system).
As the comedian Norm McDonald noted, in the movie, Frost beat Nixon, but in the real interview series, Nixon beat Frost. It wasn’t even close. And in large part it rehabilitated him to the point that he could face crowds again, and like his handpicked successor started to earn a living off being an ex-President.
Even before the conclusion of the 1972 “peace treaty” with Hanoi, made near the end of the campaign, McGovern’s ass was toast and everyone knew it. Nixon lost Massachusetts (a loss often attributed to his closure of the pointless naval base) — only George Washington had won every last electoral vote.
I was going to post something similar but did not . . . it also may well be a trial run for future events - but the hook, definitely!
Yes fate is a fickle lady. Mr. GG2s mother invoked the sole surviving son clause 3 days before he was supposed to report for marine sniper school. He had been heavily recruited. So he got mad left for Europe and ended up in the middle of the Yom Kippur war. Crazy times. :-)
Is this the one?

Hmm, I can’t get it to load. Here’s a thumbnail, I think this is the one:
