PATERSON, N.J. — Multimillion-dollar Powerball winner Pedro Quezada, 49, of Wayne appeared in Passaic County Court Monday on charges he repeatedly raped his 11-year-old stepdaughter until she reached the age of 14.

His brothers, children and wife are standing behind him. Quezada's defense attorneys stated that Quezada's wife, Inez Sanchez - who is the mother to the alleged victim - does not believe her daughter's story.

"I think it’s a money grab," said defense attorney Rafael Betancourt.......

As the Church Lady would say: “Well. Isn’t that convenient?”

“Quezada won $338 million in 2013. His wife later sued him for her share of the money. They are now back together.”

So his wife doesn’t want to live with him, sues him, but now they are back together. Yet she seems real quick to say her daughter is lying. If I had left my husband (if I were a woman!) it would be for a good reason (lying, cheating, beating, etc.). I find it interesting that she now believes her husband has a higher morality than her daughter.

I’m guessing for tens of millions of dollars it will cause some to toss their own child under the bus. Not sure why mom couldn’t just take the money and be quiet about the rapes. Although I suppose it is easier to believe the husband if the wife stays with him.

Or - the 20-year-old daughter is lying.

What a mess. One more reason I can add for almost never playing the lottery. (I have to admit, I’ve bought one ticket for perhaps 4 of them when they make the news!)

The headline and story are poorly written. The headline sounds like he was accused of raping the step-daughter who was released from jail.

It never says exactly why Quezada was in jail. Basically, he was brought in on the step-daughter’s say-so, was never found guilty of any crime, and by her own admission stopped bothering her around 2011 when he didn’t win the money until 2013.

The wife got back together with him despite the fact that they never divorced and she apparently got “her share” of the money, though the article doesn’t make that explicit either. Most of us know couples who split and reconcile and split again for things big and small.

The young woman will have t come up with more evidence to convict Mr. Quezada than what the article presents.

I have seen many cases where the depraved mom takes the depraved child molester dad’s side in the deal and will not stand up for the child. I believe the daughter. Daughters don’t usually say this stuff if it isn’t true.

Earlier reports did not identify the accuser as his stepdaughter. In my opinion, this information doesn’t make either interpretation more likely. However, the fact that she is now 20 - six years after the identified time of events - makes it unlikely there is any evidence.

When millions are involved *anything’s* possible.Presumably the prosecution arranged,at some point, for the girl to undergo a full medical and psychological evaluation to check for signs of abuse. If they did the report would be of enormous importance.

No evidence except that giant pile of money he won.

"Usually" isn't the same as never. There are plenty of cases where that is exactly what happened. Lottery winnings just muddy the issue in all directions, providing motives every which way.

The article doesn't give enough information to make an informed determination. There is also the possibility the "sexual favors" were far short of actual rape. (although I do admit the possibility that he stopped when she turned 14 to avoid getting her pregnant).

The money is why the mother is selling out the daughter. He stopped when she turned 14 because she stopped putting up with it.

Hardly enough in the article to make a conclusion either way. I will say this, though: I hope the daughter is lying, because few things would be worse than your own mother turning her back on your molestation.

Maybe. Maybe not. Need more than a surmisal to convict a man.

Trying to figure out why the reporter put this in the article or why investigators would care:

Quezada used to own a bodega before he became a multimillionaire. The alleged victim stated to prosecutors that he would chase anyone who stole from him down the street and try to fight them, rather than call police.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the allegations and quite frankly would make me more sympathetic to him if I was on the jury.
