AUGUSTA (WGME) -- Gov. Paul LePage said Monday that he may remove two Maine sheriffs for not cooperating with federal immigration officials an apparent shot at one sheriff who announced last week that he wouldnt hold federal inmates past their release dates.
The Republican governor told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham that he would be issuing an executive order soon because Maine has a couple of sheriffs who say theyre not going to work with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
So, theres likelihood that youre going to be hearing some stories about some sheriffs being removed from their duties, he said.
He didnt name any sheriffs, but Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce, a Democrat, sent a letter to ICE earlier this month saying that he wouldnt hold the agencys inmates past scheduled release dates because of constitutional concerns around false imprisonment.
Its unclear who the other sheriff that LePage mentioned is. LePage spokeswoman Julie Rabinowitz didnt immediately respond to messages seeking comment. An assistant to Joyce said he was in a meeting on Monday afternoon.
The Maine Constitution allows the governor to remove a sheriff from office after a complaint, due notice and a hearing if he finds the sheriff is not faithfully or efficiently performing any duty imposed on them by law.
That’s right remove them!
So notify ICE well in advance and they'll be waiting.
It's not rocket science!

Best governor in all 50 states....by far.
LePage will make Californians remember his name.
Colins wins. She appoints him to finish out her term.
Would she do that?... if Collins likes him maybe we should reconsider...
Good.
Hilarious that a senior advisor engineer I frequently worked with had the exact same name.
I live in Maine.
Gov. LePage is NOTHING like Susan Collins.
They are light years apart.
Gov. LePage might run for the U.S. Senate next year against Angus King, the so-called Independent who is really a democrat.
“Immigrants” are really illegal aliens.
Cumberland County is the most heavily populated Maine county....it’s where Portland is located. Moonbat, illegal alien, and “refugee” central.
I don't know how Maine goes about acquiring their Sheriffs but in Ohio they're elected officials... While they're in their own counties they are Uno numero... You don't mess with'um...
Paul LePage has definitively declared he will not be a candidate for the US Sent in 2018.
Susan Collins is still deciding on running for governor. I don’t think she would win the republican nomination or as an independent if she chose to go that route. She cannot run as an independent after losing a primary. Our election law requires her to unenroll by Jan 1, 2018 if she wants to run without a party. We do not have an “independent” designation in Maine.
Maine sherrifs are elected but they are officers of the state and subject to removal by the governor as per the state Constitution.
I suspect Ohio sherrifs are also officers of the state of Ohio.
Yes, Paul, is fighting for Maine, unlike their Senators!!
LePage is a beautiful WYSIWYG ... like an unpolished Trump.
York County is another liberal county. Kittery to Kennebunkport, should be Cumberland, then York would be RED.
