Yesterday, Pittsburgh Steeler tackle Alejandro Villenueva was hailed as a hero for seeming to buck the tide of disrespect for the United States that is the flavor du jour in the Roger Goodells NFL. While the Steelers cowered in the locker room rather than pretend for a couple of minutes that they were proud to be Americans, Villanueva, West Point graduate, Army Ranger, and decorated combat veteran, stood alone on the sideline.
Now Villanueva says it was all just a big, big mistake. This is via Chris Adamski who covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

And, to think, I ordered this guy's jersey (well, the t-shirt version, anyway) to support him. When that damn thing comes in, I'm sending it right back.
Also, sorry if anyone is offended that I didn't do a search before posting. I didn't see a thread, and, no, I didn't even look for a thread. If that bothers you, shove it. The only thing worse than a Libturd Snowflake is a FReeper Thread Snowflake. I'm sick of all of it.
I hope people saved their receipts. My guess is a lot of people who recently bought his jersey will now be returning it for a refund.
I think he was “forced” to do it or lose his position.
He should have quit instead.
Now, he’s in the same boat as the rest of the anti-American azzwipes.
It’s really sad — pathetically so — when a soldier succumbs to pressure by those who are not worthy to shine his shoes and sacrifices his dignity and his courage.
I dunno. Facing death in the ME I don’t think he’s afraid of anything.
Too bad he buckled to pressure.
He did the right thing, but now has sullied that.
I guess it’s pretty tough when all of your thug teammates decide you’re no longer on their side. What a shame. Like all of those people who come out against homosexuals pretending they can be married, then 3 days later after they are the onslaught of the lavender mafia, they obediently apologize.
Shame!!!!!!!
You went from hero to the #1 bum. How could you turn coats like that???
Shameful, disgraceful, spoiled, anti-American brats. Disgusting group-think. Among all socialists, The State is everything; the individual is nothing. Socialism for all, and all for socialism, EXCEPT FOR ME!
Wow.
Something tells me he got threatened behind the scenes, but for an Army Ranger to knuckle under...I mean, I’m not military...but that just seems like an ultimate disgrace upon himself and betrayal of his Ranger colleagues.
What the hell is going on?
Apology NOT accepted.
Most people think that Villa sounded like a kidnap victim, reading a note scribbled out by his coach.
Of the 16 teams that that stood for the Anthem Sunday, 10 won.
Of the 6 teams that stood who lost, 5 played against teams that also stood
Only 1 team that stood (Houston) lost against a team that knelt (New England), and by only three points. That game was much closer than it should have been.
New England is the only kneeling or absent team that won against a standing opponent.
I don’t believe for one second that he didn’t know what he was doing. It’s shameful to know that a hero, a man of that size and strength can be so easily bullied and forced to conform.
He did it for his team, not his country. Sickening, shocking & so very disappointing given his background.
Dear Dumbass,
Your industry isn’t “gridiron” or “field battles” or “friendly combat”... it’s entertainment. When you forget the purpose of your industry, you make terrible business decisions. It’s the fans who buy your entertainment that drive your industry. The League is crapping all over them. You were the exception.
In a moment of clarity, you chose to respect the fans and the nation in defiance of idiot teammates who chose instead to make a political point the fans themselves made clear they did not support. The fans made it very clear they supported you in your choice. You are now turning your back on them in a profound way.
That is bad patriotism, bad professionalism, and a very bad business decision.
Now, you are simply a dumbass like the rest of them.
Mike Tomlin was clearly peeved at him, so he risked being benched at the very least.
Likely USAA also pressured him. He stars in their ads, and they probably got 10,000 phone calls yesterday.
Gotta teach the others not to go undermining the narrative, dontcha know.
I wonder if they threatened the lives of his children
Team over country
Sports players over patriots like cops and troops
And fans know the difference
Game over, man
Game over
If you listen to his whole statement and not selected excerpts, he does not apologize for standing. He regrets that it makes his teammates look bad (it does, correctly). He even said something about some teammates wanted to join him, but it got botched somehow. He reiterates that he does not think the anthem is the correct venue for protest. I’m supporting every player that stands, regardless of team-oriented turmoil they may be feeling.
Interesting stats. Is this going to be the new norm? The Kneelings vs. the Standings? Yuck.
Damn the left for politicizing everything in the US.
