Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday he will decide "in the near future" the fate of a controversial and politically complex measure that would expand taxpayer-subsidized abortions for women covered by Medicaid and state employee insurance.
The Republican governor's decision has major political consequences as he seeks re-election, illustrated by his vow in April to veto the bill and comments last week that he was undecided.
Democrats who run the legislature approved the legislation May 10 but did not send it to Rauner's desk until Monday. The governor was immediately peppered with questions at a pair of stops about what he'll do with the bill.
"I am personally pro-choice, but I respect the moral arguments and the debate on the other side and I am listening and we will make a decision in the near future," Rauner said in Rockford.

He has 60 days to make the right choice on HB 40. This bill would legal.
* Provide free Medicaid abortions with no restrictions.
* Abortions would be covered for any reason through the nine months of pregnancy, even if an unborn baby feels pain and can survive outside the womb.
* Remove the ban on state employees insurance policies paying for abortions.
* Provide no monetary cap to the number of abortions that could be covered by Medicaid.
* Remove language concerning the General Assemblys declaration that the unborn child is a human being from the time of conception and is, therefore, a legal person for purposes of the unborn childs right to life.
ACT NOW! Call Gov. Rauner (217-782-0244) Tell him "A PLEDGE IS A PLEDGE. VETO HB 40!"
Thanks stars & stripes forever.
Last night, I read that Rauner will sign that bill. Will that cause William Kelly to win his primary? I hope Kelly will get about 2/3 of the vote.
