The Steelers will be on the sideline during the national anthem in future games, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and defensive end Cam Heyward said during a news conference Monday.
Roethlisberger, via a statement posted on his website, said he has regrets over the Steelers decision to wait in the tunnel during the national anthem at Sundays game in Chicago, but that the teams intent was not to protest the song, the flag or the military.
Roethlisberger said that he personally believes that protests have no place during the national anthem, but that the idea was to show unity as a team in the wake of president Donald Trump saying NFL teams should fire players who kneel for the anthem.

Anyone - I repeat anyone - who follows the lead of Colin Kaepernick has some serious problems with coherent thinking.
I shouldn’t have loaded my pistol, aimed it at my head and pulled the trigger.
How stupid and tone deaf can these brainwashed aholes be? /rhet
My read on Tomlin is he’s a politicized hire by a politicized ownership group who couldn’t wait for the opportunity to take a jab at Trump.
As a Pittsburgh native and long time Steeler fan I really think Rothlisberger understands his mistake in following Tomlins call. Ben is probably playing his last year and realized his mistake and decided to speak up.
Wish he had done it yesterday but happy he stepped up today.
Big Ben feeling mighty small after the actions of the only real man on the team (Villanueva) made the other players look like morons and wusses.
He looked sort of alone to me. But don't worry, WE'VE got his back.
Social media are melting down and these dumbasses are looking like deer in the headlights. I don't think any of them expected this. Next Sunday will be very interesting indeed. I'll be reading about it, I sure as hell won't be watching it.
No wonder Big Ben went down for repair.
It’s off by about 30 hours.
Too late coward. Pittsburg Kneelers and the rest of the NFL cannot go belly up soon enough for me. And as for “my” Hayward and the stunt they pulled in London sunday, I will be doing my part to bankrupy the team, its sponsors, the local TV outlets that carry the games and all of their sponsors. There has to be a consequence for their stupidity.
I think someone told him the motto, “Rangers Lead the Way”! Oooha!
“the only chance the NFL ever had to stop the inevitable destruction was to FIRE Kapernik Immediately...”
True and they didn’t. It was an in your face middle finger to the American people.
Maybe there was something in Tomlin’s NFL contract that required him to be on the field. I give him no credit for standing there alone. Did he have his hat in his hand and covering his heart?
Hayward = Jagwads. Dang autocorrect!
Well, the fool jabbed himself in the locker room.
all of em will...Trump played em like a violin, and in typical brain - dead athlete fashion, they didnt think this through...unless something big happens damn soon, this league will be done after this year..
“I don’t know if the most effective way is to sit down during the national anthem with a country that’s providing you freedom, providing you $16 million a year ... when there are black minorities that are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan for less than $20,000 a year,” Villanueva told ESPN last year.
Ben has just been trumped in every conceivable fashion. Patriotism, class, graciousness, thankfulness, business skill, endorsement money,
It is possible I would go to the game just in support of Vilanueva. If could isolate more support to just him!
“...the idea was to show unity as a team in the wake of president Donald Trump saying NFL teams should fire players who kneel for the anthem.”
Get back to me when you actually DO fire the dirtbags who kneel for the Anthem.
Villanueva will probably be fined or shunned for acting honorably. I can hear the charge now -- "He wasn't showing team spirit."
What about the "team" that really matters? Team USA?
We've got a lot of ignorant and undeserving citizens who have broken faith with America's founding principals, if they even know what they are. Liberal and racist indoctrination has borne its wicked fruit.
