Trump's Alabama Rally May Spotlight GOP Divide
RealClearPolitics ^ | 9/22/17 | Caitlin Huey-Burns

Donald Trump's visit to Alabama on Friday night to rally the troops for Republican Sen. Luther Strange figures to be a jubilant homecoming, as the state served as something of a launching pad for his presidential campaign.

But by Wednesday morning, he could be feeling a bit of a hangover.

A Republican primary runoff to fill the U.S. Senate seat held by now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions might be headed for an upset, as controversial Judge Roy Moore leads in the polls against Strange, who was appointed to the upper chamber in February.

A Moore victory would deliver a gut punch to Republican Party leaders, who have poured money in to defeat him and prop up the incumbent. Such an outcome is one Trump would understand better than anyone. Which is why voters in the state and conservative activists outside it were perplexed -- some even disappointed — that he waded into the race on behalf of the Mitch McConnell-favored candidate, or "Big Luther," as the president calls the 6-foot-9 senator...

Candidate Trump, campaigning in Alabama and running against the establishment GOP, might have also supported Moore, who is more in his mold than Strange. But President Trump doesn't have many loyalists in Congress, and insists he is rewarding the incumbent for being one of the few. "Looking forward to Friday night in the Great State of Alabama. I am supporting ‘Big’ Luther Strange because he was so loyal & helpful to me!" he tweeted.

Now, the president's task is to push Strange over the finish line in a race that places Trump himself on the other side of his supporters. And while Trump remains wildly popular in Alabama, the runoff on Tuesday will test his clout...

What in the world is Trump’s rationale for supporting Strange? This has the vague feeling of Bush jr. supporting Arlan Specter.

This is a lose/lose for Trump.

If Moore wins, the MSM will spend another two weeks pushing this as yet another loss for Trump.

If Strange wins, it will be more sludge added to the swamp. The GOPe is scared that a Moore win will be a grassroots domino effect across the entire Congress (a good thing), and a Strange win could stop that from happening.

The media can’t help themselves, can they? Quote: “. . . controversial Roy Moore . . ..” As if Luther Strange is NOT controversial and otherwise entwined in the Governor’s escapades.

If you’re right, then this is another inexplicable mistake for Trump. Is he really becoming that desperate to kiss GOPe rear-ends?

In the first round, robocalls were sent out using the POTUS to support Strange.

But this is not about who Donald Trump supports but is about what Donald Trump’s supporters like me voted for?

Real and meaningful change in policy to stop cheap labor from entering the country through front doors at the southern border or back doors through “H” visas.

Last night Roy Moore laid out a case against Luther Strange that included the fact that Strange is part owner of a business bringing workers into the country on “H” visas.

We will get another Donald Trump in Washington if Roy Moore wins.

We will get another Paul Ryan or Mitch McConnell in Washington if Luther Strange wins.

I watched Strange use Donald Trump’s name in vain last night to make people think they were on the same team.

They aren’t regardless of the words expressed or show put on tonight. The facts speak loud and clear.

My blog post on the debate:

Alabama Freepers- GET OFF YOUR ASSES and get out the vote for Moore.

Very few people vote in primaries. If every freeper voted Moore would win in a landslide.

My guess is Trump is working a deal with McConnell for something... DACA related? maybe Obamacare repeal? something else? Otherwise this makes no sense.

Strange figured out early on that the only chance he had was to hitch his wagon to Trump - 100%. Trump is honoring that public show of loyalty, but what he completely underestimated (and as a Mo Brooks supporter, I did too, frankly) is the folk hero appeal of Roy Moore, who has lost two jobs already because he took a stand for Biblical values.

Yes - Trump will be seen as a loser when Moore wins the seat, but there will be no practical difference in governance as a result... except that Roy Moore will be a pain-in-the-backside of the GOP because he's definitely no politician.

My thoughts exactly. Trump needs to hear the parable of the tortoise and the scorpion.

Good question. I suspect that the President feels ‘Big Luther’ will
be more likely to support his positions stronger than Moore will.

Or remind himself his often vocalized "The Snake." His support of Strange no doubt bites him. The swamp has far too many toxic creatures within it.

Inclined to agree with you. Prolly a quid pro quo, but a risky one for Trump.

I don’t think he should be making any deals with McConnell or Ryan. They are trying to undermine him at every turn.

Instead, Trump should be pushing them hard to deliver — and publically holding them accountable for their failures. Neither one has done a damn thing for Trump or the country over the past nine months. Make them produce some tangible results BEFORE you agree to negotiate with them on anything.

If Trump thinks that he is sorely mistaken. There's a reason a snake like McConnell is supporting Strange. Strange is a classic establishment Republican - he will do and say anything to keep his cushy job in Washington and the trappings of power it brings. We've already seen that Moore is a man of principles and is more than willing to sacrifice his job to maintain them. Whatever Moore thinks of Trump there is no way he would compromise himself with the swamp. He can smell the stench and he doesn't like it.

Methinks the usual snowflakes are going to try to make hay out of milkshakes again.

President Trump’s support of Strange makes perfect sense to me. If Strange wins (doubtful)Turtle owes President Trump.

If Moore wins (likely) President Trump gets a new supporter in the Senate.

Based on reports out of Alabama folks there aren’t upset President Trump is supporting Strange (what a freaking last name, eh?) & they’ve said they will continue to support President Trump and vote for Moore. Again, it’s a win for the President, IMO.
