It absolutely was. There is such a thing as an AK47 pistol and it is not the same thing as an AK47 rifle. You'd carry the pistol variant for close-quarters fighting. This officer was a veteran of Iraq so he was familiar with the differences and why one is better than the other. I'm not making any claims over whether it was right or wrong--I'm only pointing out the weapon exists.
