government contractors and state and local governments on the west coast have been the main purchasers of fallout shelters

Well yeah, they're likely the only one's who could afford them. What's left of the middle class in CA can't even afford your basic 50 year old home. So forget the bomb shelters. Not happening for them.

government employees and contractor employees can emerge after a nuke exchange

Man, if that's what the nuke shelter people are selling, it's getting pretty deep.☺

But i wouldn't worry much about post nuke LA. It would probably take 5 years just to put out all the fires.

Wow. I was on the naval base in Norfolk. I don’t remember any reports of people fleeing the Hampton Roads area.

lol, it’s a terrific game, virtual world actually...some of the darker aspects can be disturbing but I enjoy the settlement building and management stuff

To show you how much the dark aspects did not bother me, I immediately went for the Cannibal perk.

Strong, the Supermutant companion, likes it when I eat humans.

“Leave some for Strong, human!”
“Strong is hungry. Want someone to eat.”

It was a madhouse with people trying to get out of town, grabbing groceries, wrecks at many intersections.

That explains it. Los Angeles is always like that. :)

"Man, if that's what the nuke shelter people are selling, it's getting pretty deep.☺"

I was rather considering what some of the government-funded buyers believe that they are buying. Over time, we've learned quite a bit about thought patterns of many of the more liberal local politicians and bureaucrats.

Most of us are each capable of building or installing a shelter or having it done. We start studying, working, saving and assume that there is enough time.

Prepper ping - possible California (Long Beach) population reaction to a nuclear blast

The article is pretty informative regarding population expectations and reactions to a nuclear detonation:
social breakdown among the population
loss of electronics/ communication
emergency services ( medical/police/fire/ambulance) hobbled
healthcare facilities overwhelmed
adjoining counties overwhelmed by evacuees

At Ground Zero, you’re right. Otherwise, outside that zone, most everyone WILL survive. Now, HOW they will survive will depend on a number of factors but for sure, one will be their level of knowledge about things like fallout, gamma rays, potassium iodide, and then have the ability to hunker down for a few weeks without having to venture out. Home security comes into play there, of course.

Interesting sidenote- I’ve been monitering the Hurrican Irma channel on Zello this past week. Lots of first hand accounts of dealing without the modern conveniences we all take for granted, including credit/debit card transactions, lack of cash, potable water, power, gas, etc....even with a massive government and grass roots rescue/recovery effort pre-loaded and underway. Most of south Florida and the Keys are still a no-go zone. A cautionary tale about preparedness being presented here and now.

They will have far fewer than 55 electoral votes if this were to happen.

That’s a start but be sure to adjust for your climate and physical ability as well as personal survival vs. home or safe room planning.

Garbage cans for transport was a new idea for me to include. I had hoped to stay in place but might have to prepare to “move out”...Thanks for that awareness. I would hate to be prepared and have to leave it all behind. I will re-think a second larger and longer term “bug out” plan.

Built for bottleneck:
" Is Florida growing too fast to evacuate before monster storms?"

Only three major North/South interstate roadways (#95 & #75, plus Florida Turnpike (tolls))
Two minor North/South roadways which go through various towns, villages, and too much local traffic.
Evacuation routes are too restrictive

The race is on... can we as a people ‘trump this threat’ before some rogue State explodes a nuke a hundred miles over Denver?

“.....what state has done the most to ruin our
Judeo-Chtistian nation. (?)”

You mean WHAT STATE OF MIND has done the most to ruin
our Judeo-Chtistian nation (?). As a native 4th generation
Californian I remember better days as do millions of
other Cali conservatives. Most of the damage has been
done by liberal transplants. And, if you look around
you’ll see that they are hard at work in your own
back yard.

And, this is what passes for humor as parts of our
Eastern Seaboard are freshly pummulted by disaster
and the rest of it has been or could be subjected
to same? Hmmm....
