Public support for single-payer health care is growingin fact, a Kaiser Family Foundation poll in July found a majority of Americans support itbut that increase comes with an important caveat. Most Americans only want government-run health care until they find out that it means the government will run their health care.
I thought about that this morning while reading J.D. Tuccille's excellent piece asking, "Are You Sure You Want Medicare For All?" He walks through the various ways government-run health care seems to be appealingit means families no longer have to bear the cost of heartbreaking medical disasters on their own, for exampleand the far greater number of reasons why government-run health care would be a fiscal, political, and medical disaster:

Should the government have to right to deny care and make life or death decisions?
Also, when insurance is free, there is no motivation to be frugal and wise in how the money is spent... unless the government is allowed to dictate care and how much is paid for services. If that happens, then quality suffers.
Imagine: a government union surgeon.
Imagine the salaries at the top.
Imagine the delays.
The way the TSA is patting people down now, you gotta wonder if they’re going to be the health care providers.
Why wouldnt every fine citizen of this great country want the exceptional health care that it lavishes upon its veterans?
um...why is nobody reporting that real recently, Vermont(population 625k) and California (population 39.3 million) came to the conclusion that single payer is too expensive ?
“Government run health care”......
Would be unmitigated disaster.
Ever heard the expression, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you?” Then the wheels fall off your wagon! NO THANKS “Gubmint”, I’ll take care of it myself.
But the average American is stupid and won't be able to figure out the difference.
If we can confuse them into thinking Single Payer = Government Employed doctors and that scares the Bejeesus out of them, then so be it.
(Single Payer is still bad, but for different reasons.)
The bureaucracy. The fraud. The corruption. The waste. All those things government is justly famous for.
Just remember.. half the people BY DEFINITION are in the lower half of the bell curve.
I saw a reasonable study that showed the majority of those are democrats and a thin sliver of intellectuals are also democrats.
I think the lower half are democrat because they are too stupid to know better, the smart ones are doing it by choice because they can control the stupid ones.
To do this poll correctly two questions should be asked of the person being polled.
1. Do you trust the federal government?
After they answer that, you ask them...
2. Do you want them running your health care?
Maybe some conservative polling outfit will get this message?
Proposed poll question: “Do you want the people who run Amtrak to take out your appendix?”
Who are these numbnuts that the pollsters are surveying? What in God’s good graces did they think was going to run MEDICARE FOR ALL????
Medicare patients still have to pay for care. People don’t want to pay ANYTHING for health care.
Medicare for All is just a softer way of saying Single Payer.
If the government pays for it all. The government will regulate how it’s all spent. therefore, it is government-run regardless of who takes your blood pressure or gives you the shot.AFSME will actually run everything and give a good chunk of the proceeds to the Democrats. Whee!
The question could also be do you trust the government to act in your best interest. What percentage of thinking person’s would say yes to that.
Look to the VA for a model of failed government run health care. The negative polls will be even higher once people learn how their care will be rationed by government death panels.
