Well, if I'm in Missouri and have access to generators, on top of the cost of buying the generators, it is going to cost me a lot of money to bring them to Florida. The problem with this type of rhetoric and threats is that nobody will bring in generators and then the people who need them will not be able to buy them at all. The law of supply and demand, with respect to pricing, may seem harsh at times like this, but it ensures that there will actually BE a supply.
What do you think about this issue? IMO, I'd rather at least have the opportunity to buy a generator than have no chance at all.
She’s hot.
There’s a difference between making a profit and taking advantage of desperate people. People were selling cases of water down here for $40.
She is doing what she needs to do. Just like the AG in Texas is doing. Price gougers are abusing the free market, taking advantage of emergency to generate excess profit. Too bad the airlines are protected by Congress. They should be challenged further as well. Not good enough that they “voluntarily” rolled back prices.
She is not stopping the $1,000 generator if that is fair. What she is saying is that if this is a generator you list in Miami today for $100, then tomorrow, because of the emergency you raise to to $1,000 to take advantage, that is gouging. A bit more to this, but gouging is an ethical and moral issue, as well as legal. Say it is water, today it is $1 and tomorrow you charge $10. The poor person, thirsty has a $1 but you opt to skip them, to instead sell to a rich person for $10. Or, you take that poor person’s last $10 for that $1 bottle of water. The bottle didn’t cost you more today, you just had chance to jack up the price. I’m sure others can explain this better—there was a thread on FR about this over the past week.
you got a half dozen generators in your truck, perchance?
>> She just complained to Hannity that people were bringing in generators from out of state and charging $1000.
Because it’s rare for Florida to have intense hurricanes... and no insurance... and no federal relief... on the magnitude of billions... yet, some “greedy” out-of-staters are hauling in generators for a fraction of the cost.
Get a #ing clue, Bambi.
How do the airlines and Uber get away with charging more at peak times? That is PRICE GOUGING by this definition.
They'll run for office as "a free-market conservative" and sign on to every anti-market, anti-freedom-of-contract regulation once in office. All that separates them from the Dems is they usually won't go along with the unions on matters of importance to organized labor, e.g., minimum wage increases, prevailing wage on federal contracts, right-to-work laws.
I know, an attorney general doesn't have to be expert on everything, and chances are if she took an econ course as an undergrad it was slanted toward the Keynesian school of tax-and-spend, which predominates among the scholarly elite. Her education didn't prepare her for hurricanes and (heaven forbid!) subsequent shortages of basic necessities like water, power, gasoline and toilet paper.
Ms. Bondi, if she truly wants to advance her political career, might want to brush up a bit on basic economics and try to set herself apart from Democrats who are totally inept in that area and plan to stay that way.
The same recommendation applies to a couple of southern governors who call themselves Republicans, BTW.
Gov creates the black market. They force businesses to sell water or generators or whatever else they have for less than they could. Leading to people buying more water than they need and faster than they need and stores being sold out. Unnecessary, because Pam Bondi and other government officials dont understand economics.
You are dead on.
This is just a guess but if a store owner is concerned
that he will have difficulty refilling his inventory
or if he thinks he may suffer extensive damage that
will prevent him from conducting regular business for
a time might he raise prices to get what he can, while
he can?
First of all thank you Jesus our nation wasn’t it with 185 mph winds. irma didn’t sneak up.. it was forecast to be catastrophic well in advance. Every coastal resident should be prepared, looks like many were.
It’s the price you pay for life at the beach. Those who didn’t prepare should have left.
With the exception of the grossly disabled or handicapped, prepare. The community and multitudes of organizations care for the truly needy. In the seriously flooded areas, well I don’t think preparing can be enough.. they should have evacuated.
Instead, I saw parents with expensive strollers stand in line for a shelter.
What kind of parent doesn’t have food, water and shelter for their kids when the hurricane was forecast a week in advance.
It’s not price gouging, it’s a stupidly fee.
She’s a politician and she’s campaigning. Putting on a show of outrage for the cameras is not a Democrat failing or a Republican failing.
I listened and she said nothing unusual and I don’t recall anything she said that I disagree with.
Taking advantage of the helpless is frowned on by everything from the bible to the president.
The Ayn Rand type “conservatives” think it’s a good idea. The theory that it at least allows for supply to at least be there are wrong. It causes rebellion, and everyone agrees it is less a crime to take something when you are in self-preservation mode. Even the bible affirms that.
