The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

Oh, ya mean volunteers with boats, water craft...I have no idea what that has to with reliable communications for areas without traditional communications due to disaster, but thanks.

I downloaded that app and it is buggy as I can fast forward to 8 pm tonight or 20:00 and it’s at cape coral, then an hour later it’s all the way in north port at 9pm then from 10=12 it’s the same pic at north port. Then at 1 am it’s north of tampa. I live in sarasota and would like to see when it actually his here. Stupid app.
They used communication that was being discussed above. That was the whole reason they were mentioned.
My point is when you don’t have those things, a FREE app on your phone can be lifesaving.
You have people in South Florida right this minute who bore the brunt of a category 4 hurricane and they are on Zello as we speak broadcasting info and answering other people who need help in real time.
Thousands are also listening to that channel in real time.
I’m not saying replace what you already have with Zello. I’m telling you and anyone one else who will listen what an amazing tool it is.

Right now I’m monitoring the South Florida Hurricane Irma channel.
Where is this? I’m in sarasota and when I turn on wifi I get nothing. I’m having to tether my phone to my pc. I have sprint and don’t think they allow hot spots

Yeah, the last few days are so much better. I forgot what a blue sky looks like and air not saturate with smoke smells like. I’m in SW - are you around here? Chetco Bar fire is just a few miles from here.

I have to admit I've not seen with my own eyes this type of thing regarding shutters, but just now did search and find a 'clam shell awning' that had struts on either side -->here and here. Is what's in the photos there what you are contending with? Those are more sunshades than storm shutters, near as I can tell...
A bit more searching led to a small image of a adjustment 'slip collar with screw' --->here among the small images under label "Awning components".
So I think I see what you may be contending with.

Have had it for years....takes an external ant to hear shortwave well..has internal for AM band.

My HF gear both transmits and receives 100khz to 30mhz.
I'm a 160mtr guy mostly...just above the AM band at 1800khz-2000khz Takes a BIG antenna though...great for close in work to about 1000mi and has no skip-zone:-)
160mtr antennas are just big sky-burners and the rf goes mostly straight up and back down...best at night. With a full KW out on SSB you have a signal comparable to a 20-50kw AM station in usable coverage.
Some nights you cover the entire CONUS with a good signal.
Even at high-noon you can work out to 500mi using CW.
I know of some guys using old signal-corp AM transmitters on 160...the same type as used in Nam as Armed Forces Radio stations....heavy mofos! takes a crew to move them.
A friend of mine used to have one installed in the spare bedroom of his mobile home!
It seems to continue to be drifting just slightly east of north. I’m not so sure it won’t enter the Atlantic if this keeps up.
The Cajun Navy used Zello to communicate with each other, and people who needed rescuing used the app to communicate with the Cajun Navy.

I’m in Knoxville and was a little worried at those graphics showing the area as a possible problem. Looks much better today, though!!
Actually, I do need them and for much more than just disasters. And just because some folks still have connectivity in a hurricane certainly does not mean that is always the case. And this tells me those still connected likely did not take the full potential this hurricane was capable of.
Look if ya feel a cell phone or tablet is better or will give you better and more reliable communication in a pending disaster, than a portable, all band general coverage receiver, have at it, no problem! ☺☺☺

Hemingway House’s Kitties are Safe After Hurricane Irma Spares Key West
The cats who call the Hemingway House in Key West home are all safe and accounted for after the bulk of Hurricane Irma spared the island city ... TMZ has learned.
Staff members that work at the Hemingway House tell us all 55 cats — and the people who stayed behind to care for them — are a-okay at the property ... which itself is still standing and suffered no major structural damage.
We’re told all 10 Hemingway occupants, including manager Jacque Sands, lucked out big time since Irma left significantly less destruction than in the other Keys. Sources tell us while there are a few trees down on the estate, everything else at the house appears to be fine.
The Hemingway House also avoided major flooding. A source at the National Weather Service tells us Key West only saw a water surge of about 3 feet as opposed to the 15-20 feet anticipated throughout the Keys as Irma approached. We’re told Key West was in the eye wall — the strongest part of the hurricane — for 2 hours. Water has begun to recede as Irma moves north.
As a result, those at the house are not currently inundated by water unlike Miami — but are staying inside until winds die down.
As for those 6-toed cats ... talk about nine lives, huh?
