Hurricane Irma Live Thread III
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/09/2017 2:08:31 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.

Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

It could be that the 2 indicates direction but I’m not really sure cause some of those numbers went up and down.

If they used a 3 for westward motion, then you would see that change, too.

But the longitude numbers themselves tell whether the track is easterly or westerly so there would be no need to use some other number out front.

Have a good night.

I’m going to TRY to get to bed and try to get some sleep.

The tornadoes could be doing more property damage than the hurricane itself would have, aside from the storm surge.

thanks that’s interesting.
The wind speed is in knots, not the more common (to most of us) MPH.
The chart seems to indicate peak speed of 113 knots. That is 130 MPH.

It’s more that you could be injured by windows breaking, and you would have to retreat to stairwells and deal with howling winds blowing rain and debris at you for hours.

You are getting the best info out there.

The High Level pics are outstanding. It gives an honest depiction of what may steer this storm.

Looks like it is getting well clear of the Cuban coast now.

Hold on to something for hours?

I doubt I could do it.

There is also flying debris to worry about.

And yes, I would worry about being blown or sucked out a window.

Me and heights do not get along well in the first place so the question of riding it out in a high rise will NEVER enter the equation.

However, there are some FReeprs who are made of sterner stuff than I when it comes to heights.

"North is 360".

Yes, and north is also 0. The storm is moving at 305 degrees where projections showed something more like 340 degrees. The projections have been moving to the west. I don't want this hurricane to hit anyone, but I would like it to take a path more to the west to avoid the population centers that it is forecast to hit.

Tornadoes during Elana created havoc across Gulfport.

I flew in after day one on a military flight and it was devastating.

I saw images of what tornadoes did in Homestead after Andrew.

Between the hurricane and the tornadoes, it looked like a war zone.

It looks like the live webcams in Key West have stopped working. Guessing they lost power.

Thanks. I hang out at the wunderground.com blog and bring over what I believe to be relevant and of interest to FReepers. That filters out all the other stupid crap there, and trust me, it gets thick with such.

You mean like the sheriff tweeting that people should not shoot guns at Irma, because it won’t work?
