The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.
Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

Hurricane Irma Live Thread I
Hurricane Irma Live Thread II
I’m watching it on two different radars. It’s heading straight at Key West.
I need to go to bed, but I just can’t.
I’m not faulting Gov. Scott, I think there was overreaction driven by media hysteria that led to excessive evacuation that was not called for officially or necessary at the time, now the roads are clogged, gas is scarce or not available, and so the apparent site of actual landfall is having difficulty with evacuations.
Key West gets all of both sides of the eyewall, unless something major changes.
Rough estimate of max surge, from western Key West past Marathon to include Layton.
Yes, piecing together the reported position over time shows shift north, now/was direct at Key West. Will the straits shift it east? Best part on positive not is that this storm will make landfall more or less into the least populated area of the state.
Key West and then up to Naples. If it goes west and stays in the warm water, it could track the west coast of florida without losing as much intensity and hit east of Pensacola.
One poster put up cat 5 winds already present. Might get upgraded again.
Three day event here. News lags events by more hours, the further in we get.
I have 24-48 before I have to sleep, but I need to eat now.
I have met him several times and think the world of him and Pam Bondi.I wouldn’t want anyone else running the show in Fla.Opinions vary.
My daughter/son-in-law have a home on Sugarloaf work in Key West and I have a business in Islamorada. I’m glad we got out.
5 am report shows gusts now to 160.
We’re expecting the eye Cat 3/4 tonight. Eeeeesh.
I’m glad you got out, too. I have a whole lot of friends down there, and I’ve been almost begging them to leave for quite a few days now. Some listened, some didn’t.
It took me 15 hours to get out of the Keys to North Fla. on Thursday. Ironically, Friday my daughter made it to Port St. Lucie in normal time and got gas on the turnpike. So it’s pretty much a crap shoot.
Love the tagline. Very environmentally sensitive.
We are the Media that count. We are the New Media—talk radio, intenet and the ocassional tv net. The rest are all too biased to count on. Some have their moments but their ownership alone precludes putting any trust into them.
I won’t do it.
I was trained on this anyway. Swapped out 550 batteries on Thursday and Friday.
I have learned to adapt to anything. My sleep is a bit messed up. I love the weather events.
I just start a music thing and go with it.

And shift north from 310 degrees to 325 degrees and now 40 miles from Key West. Movement speed picked up from 6 to 8 mph over the past hour or so.
They’ve pulled out all the stops trying to resupply gas stations down there, maybe it’s making a difference although I’m acquainted with several people who made their determination to remain in the Tampa area based at least partially on the difficulty of actually evacuating.
Marathon goes from mm 48-56 or 57 Layton is at 68 on the other side of Long Key bridge. Islamorada starts at MM73 at Caloosa cove marina on the other side of channel 2 technically.
Once again you have done a magnificent job in sometimes tough terrain.
I guess landfall will happen pretty soon now....
One of my best friends in Andy Newman of Stuart Newman and assoc. he does more to help during times of need than anyone could ever expect. I need to check in on him.
