The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.
Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

Current max wave heigth is 31 feet.
94 mph gust at Key West.
The reporting has been excellent. It’s the buoy system that needs to be privatized. Not having buoys at American shoals and sombrero being down forever is killing us info wise.
How many people moved unneccessariy, driven by media and government hype and hysteria? Seriously, are so many homes really not capable of handling the wind this storm forecast? Current building codes reflect lessons learned from Andrew and others. Despite that, fear is sown and everyone rushes around like sheep. And, not the right time? When is the right time? People have short memories, increasingly conditioned to follow fear mongering.
Power outages, Key West. Trees down. Live video TWC. 31 foot waves plus 10 foot surge possible.
Where were the parents? Letting a 16 year old out, encouraging that reckless behavior. Now dead. Let them stew on that. Sad.

Evacuation is a no win in this storm.
At first it looked like the west coast would be safe. Now not so safe. If Scott didn’t order evacuation the media would have torn him apart. If he does order evacuation the media and others will still tear him apart. He really can’t win.
But I’ll take him leading the state any time over some political hack demoncrat who lets the busses drown when they were desperately needed.
The first part of the eye wall is only about twenty miles out from Key West now, the way I figure it.
Looks to be almost due north on the radar images I am looking at.
The question is, will Irma beat the shear that is also on the way, to Tampa? I don’t know...
Also, the strong oscillations continue. I’m not sure I understand the conditions that cause the conditions for this much continued wobbling. :-(

Not a huge fan of the governor politically, but I think he’s done a tremendous job preparing the state for this storm.

BTW, I was a Tonopah resident many moons ago. We had a Casino called the Mizpah and that was it. (maybe a general store on top of the hill)

Good post. Most making the calls on evacuation did the right thing at the right time. This strom has changed directions every day since it was tracked, try and forecast that.its near impossible.
