‘If they deport all of us, who will rebuild?’ Undocumented workers could be key to Texas recovery.
The Washington Post ^ | Sept. 04, 2017 | Arelis R. Hernández and Aaron C. Davis

HOUSTON — Everywhere Samuel Enríquez looks, he can see the work that needs to be done. But because he is in the United States illegally, he knows he can’t earn an official paycheck in this city’s recovery.

The carpenter from El Salvador sits on a curb outside a home improvement store, hoping a passer-by will offer $10 an hour to help rip out sewage-soaked carpets or rotting drywall. Having lived in the United States for a year, he believes Texas is as good a place as any to seek refuge, because that’s where the work is now, even if some government officials want him and others like him to leave the country.

“If they deport all of us, who will rebuild?” says Enríquez, 36, waiting along with about two dozen other laborers seeking work. “We do more for less.”

It will take an army of workers to reconstruct a vast swath of Southeast Texas, including the sprawling metropolis of Houston, that was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Whether the region can do it without fully embracing workers like Enríquez will soon be put to the test — with reverberations that could be felt nationwide.

So, if guest workers are needed, reinstate the Bracero Program or other legal guest worker problem. It just amazes me that this country can't come up with something that simple and workable.

Evidently not a sufficient payoff for Congress.

If they deport us all, who will steal all the cars?

If they deport us all, who will convert prior suburbs into slums?

If they deport us all, who will blare their boombox music in the public parks.

If they deport us all, who will block traffic with slow-moving low riders?

BS - My friend, a professional and also a homeowner, and who happens to be black, had 6’ of water in his home. A friend recommended a contractor with experience and they started today to strip the first floor to the studs. The contractor and his partner found 4 other men they picked up. The agreed price was high, but not unreasonable.

Maybe all those people who flocked to the North Dakota oil boom will relocate to Texas to help with the rebuild?

Let us worry about that, Samuel. If you are illegal, just get out.

How about going back to YOUR country and rip out the sewage and rotten criminals there. Effing freeloader.

These illegals are worse than the fire ants—and harder to get rid of permanently.

I was raised on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin. Had chores to do every day & none could be put off. Animals HAD to be fed—no exceptions. COLD? Who cared? Hot? Who cared? Dirty work? Who cared? It had to be done & we couldn’t ‘play’ until all chores were done & all animals fed & cared for. Hogs—Chickens—sheep- dairy cows—young stock—horses we boarded & purebred Labs my mother raised for extra money. All us kids got 50 cents weekly for an ‘allowance’.

When I was about 14- I worked at a neighboring farm every Thursday in the summer. He killed, plucked & packaged 90 chickens for the local grocery store for Friday sale. 4 of us—farmer, his wife, their daughter & me. Blood, feathers, & guts, but that was the job & I got paid!! For a 14 year old kid, that was a big deal.

I once worked in a factory that makes air distribution parts-—the grills in your floors, etc at your office or home. Hot, sweaty & definately factory work.

I also once worked at a tire store-—not behind the counter or doing office work-—I was removing & replacing tires on their rims & back onto the cars, breaking down used tires on the machine & balancing them before replacement on the vehicles. Was a hot summer, I remember.

I also worked a job at an auto parts store/machine shop==carrying heavy auto parts & mixing paint. That was my DAY job at that time. 40 + hours a week & transported items back & forth to the machine shop in my station wagon.

My NIGHT job at that time was in a shop that reworked auto engine cylinder heads for better performance. I used a tool called a Domore, (Dumore)?? and lifted those heads on & off the benches, etc. 3 years of cast iron dust in my hair, skin & clothes. At least 4 hours a night.

I now own a small horse ranch & do most of the work here myself. I designed & installed all the fencing here—& at my prior horse property. Spent this AM painting one outside wall of the house—until the sun chased me off that side of the house. Will finish tomorrow. It’s only about 99 here today. No breeze.

I am now 77 & I am definately female——not a person who doesn’t know what gender they are- I know I am female & I like men. Hot, dirty jobs, and I did them-—to make a living & to pay my mortgage payments. Owned my first house at age 26 & have owned my houses since then—This property is paid for.

For the sissies of NYC who live behind security doors & doormen, you might try a working vacation on a western ranch. Learn WHERE your dinner comes from. Chik-Fil-A & SAFEWAY are ONLY interim stops between the rancher/farmer & your table-—trust me.

If they deport us all, who will burn American flags or wave Mexican flags at rallies

If they deport us all, who will flip the bird at Americans while getting your picture taken in front of Mt. Rushmore?

If they deport us all, who will get their college tuition paid for free while you sucker American students pay full freight?
