The US Forest Service was established by Congress after the catastrophic fires of 1910 destroyed thousands of acres, homes, and even entire towns in the Pacific NW.
The Forest Service was officially chartered in 1905, prior to the Great Fire of 1910, and it can trace its roots back to 1876. Several of our local forests had 100-year celebrations of the Forest Service in 2005.
