I know some people in the NYC journalism world and they were shocked and dismayed to hear this news, especially that the buyer is Tronc.
In a way, the Daily News has come full-circle, as it was founded by the same family that founded the Chicago Tribune. I remember reading the Daily News as a kid, and being amazed that the New York papers didn't have a decent comics page among them. The New York Times had none at all, of course, and the Daily News even then mostly ran comics that were distributed by the Chicago Tribune, whose biggest hits were established long ago (Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy, Gasoline Alley, Dondi). Heck, you couldn't even get Peanuts!
Zuck ran the paper poorly, so I don't see it going down anymore, but then, I haven't lived in the region for a while, so what do I know?

Yeah, I remember even as a kid thinking the comics you mentioned were all relics of a bygone age.
