The men on the ground at Houston Control performed a miracle of engineering and ballistic calculations. Houston Control saved those men.

Yes, such an event had been anticipated. Dr. Donald Gafford, of TRW, developed the equations to bring an Apollo spacecraft back to earth anywhere into an aborted mission. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom for his work. I was privileged to know him and help maintain his software.
