Cernovich is definitely a self-promoting snake who is not that bright and not to be trusted. (Is he a Deep State actor rather than his own man anyway?)
But it is not that surprising when you look toward the racialist fringe (Derbyshire is writing for VDARE now? Yikes!) and see that they are indeed nudging toward “National Socialists” (Spencer is bad news as well), rather than on a renewed expression of the traditional “right”.
Beware such included in definitions of “alt right”, however, because it is only one step from there to an attempt to say “Trump has advocated single payer too, so he’s part of this fringe, racialist “alt right” as well.
