Today is Independence Day in Malaysia, marking Malaya’s independence from Britain 60 years ago on August 31, 1957.

1. It is also known as Merdeka Day, after the cry of “Merdeka!” (meaning independent or free) that went up when independence was declared.

2. The ancient astronomer/geographer Ptolemy called Malaysia Aurea Chersonesus, meaning “peninsula of gold”.

3. Malaysia is the world’s largest supplier of rubber gloves.

4. . The Malayan tiger, which is listed as endangered, is the national animal of Malaysia.

5. In 1963, the states of Sarawak and Sabah in Borneo joined the old Malaya to form Malaysia.

6. The world’s biggest roundabout may be seen at Putrajaya in Malaysia. It is 2.2 miles in diameter.

7. The only traffic roundabout to rival it is one in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Curiously August 31 is also Independence Day in Trinidad and Tobago.

8. Malaysia’s currency is the ringgit, which means “jagged”. It originally referred to the jagged edges of Spanish silver dollars used in the region.

9. Eight of Malaysia’s 11 Olympic medals have been for badminton.

10. Malaysia’s capital is Kuala Lumpur. Kuala is the meeting of two rivers; lumpur means muddy.

Indonesia has the largest population of Muslims (190 million) of any nation in the world. As far as I know, they haven’t created trouble either.

George is out of time on his unemployment and he works harder than ever on his scheme to get a 13-week extension. He tells the unemployment office he was close to a job with Vandelay Industries, a company that makes latex products and whose main office is Jerry’s apartment.
