Manuel Rubén Abimael Guzmán Reynoso (American Spanish: [maˈnwel ruˈβen aβimaˈel ɡuzˈman reiˈnoso]; born 3 December 1934), also known by the nom de guerre Chairman Gonzalo (Spanish: Presidente Gonzalo), a former professor of philosophy, is the former leader of the Shining Path during the Maoist insurgency known as the internal conflict in Peru. Shining Path had been active in Peru since the late 1970s and began what it called "the armed struggle" on 17 May 1980. Wanted on charges of terrorism and treason, Guzmán was captured by the Peruvian government in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
While the activity of the insurgency increased shortly after Guzmán's capture,[citation needed] it has declined in the years following. It has been criticized for its violence against peasants, trade union organizers, and elected officials, which were deemed by the group to be collaborating with the Peruvian state. Shining Path is on the U.S. Department of State's "Designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations" list. The European Union, and Peru likewise describe Shining Path as a terrorist group and it prohibits its citizens from providing funds or other forms of financial support to the group.

If the government does not move quickly against the Antifa movement, in a very real probability, the group will be able to secure enough followers in its ranks to present a serious challenge to the government. History bears out this premise.
If the Left disappeared tomorrow, we would have a lot less problems in the world.
Peru’s “internal conflict”, the Shining Path insurgency was conquered due to the leadership of then President Alberto Fujimori. No question countless Peruvians were the “rubber meeting the road” but it was Fuji’s stand-up leadership that carried the day.
Nearing the end of his third-term as president, Fuji was accused of human rights violations connected to putting down the Maoist Sendero. Fleeing to Japan he was extradited to Peru. Standing trial he was convicted and sentenced to 25-years in prison.
In my opinion, in combating the Sendero Luminoso,Alberto Fujimori was faced with a brutal enemy not unlike isis, antifa or blm.
Peru should be ashamed of how they’ve treated this man.If not for him, Peru would very easily have become a Maoist cesspool.
Someone here is knowledgeable. Yep.
Unfortunately, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction in much of Latin America; Fujimori was jailed because leftists are in vogue now. They aren’t doing Peru any favors; my town here in NJ is filled with them (they are to NJ what Mexicans are to CA). Our Peruvian Day parade has been much bigger than our St. Pat’s parade for many years now...
He was just pardoned...
