It was a horrible act of racist symbolism, harkening back to the days when blacks were hung from trees with banana peels. /sarc.
But, seriously, racism is often in the eye of the beholder, and was it PROGRESSIVES who made some sort of mental connection between a banana peel and black people?
When you walk past the banana display at the supermarket, are black people the first thing you think about? Probably not. You're probably thinking about buying a few bananas for the kids' lunch or for a banana cream pie.
