And I hate that. A good part of my young childhood was spent in Istanbul. Americans were near holy in those days. My sister and I as preteens and way preteens could go anywhere our legs could carry us and if we looked lost or out of place a soldier or a taxi driver would call the consulate about the two American kids, where did they belong? and we would get a ride home in a jeep or a taxi along with dolmas or brek (sweet pastries). The soldier or taxi driver would be invited for coffee when we were brought home.
