Money money money... How many interceptors do we have? What - dozens? God forbid that these few missiles should have to protect our nation against something like thermonuclear warfare. The Israelis are in somewhat the same dilemma: excellent defensive missile technology - but at huge cost. They are facing Hezbollah with tens of thousands of Iranian supplied missiles. When war comes, as it inevitably will, the carnage will be unimaginable. Armageddon. Been there. Lived there. God help us all.
If you shoot it down and it kills people, you are to blame.
The United States had no valid reason for downing the missile. Some might conjure up some excuse but it would not be valid.
The responsibility falls to the injured party acting in self defense. That injured party is Japan. Japan chose not to react or more importantly to request that any Missile aimed in the general direction of the Japanese islands be downed by what ever American capabilities available.
In effect, Japan would hire the USA to perform the downing under contract.
Yes, if we attempt to shoot it down and fail, we’ve got egg on our faces and threats to shoot a live missile down will sound hollow.
Also carefully scripted tests, on an impromptu unannounced missile flight.
“not” an impromptu missile flight
