It seems that at the end of Luther’s life, he suffered from mental illness. I’m not defending him; I don’t care about Luther. But his later quotes don’t square with those of his when he was young.
As an old man, he probably had dementia. To make it worse, he had a devoted son-in-law who revered the great man, understood his historical importance, and wrote everything down. Not a nice thing to do to a mentally failing elder, all things considered.
