“This event is … beyond anything experienced”: National Weather Service‘s ominous warning on Harvey
MSN VOX ^ | August 27, 2017

Posted on 08/27/2017 12:00:43 PM PDT by SMGFan

Since Friday, the National Weather Service has described the impacts Hurricane (and now Tropical Storm) Harvey in superlatives, with forecasts stating the flooding would be “catastrophic” and “life threatening.”

Now, nearly 50 inches of rain (4 feet!) are in the forecast as Harvey stalls over Houston, and the Weather Service is stretching to find the right way to describe the risk.

They’re calling the situation “unprecedented.”

Long-time weather journalists and meteorologists are saying this language is as dire as the National Weather Service gets.

Rains could last through the week. Five are reported dead already. More deaths may come. This situation is likely to get worse before it gets better.

“rains” is used as in “We’re taking the trip whether it rains or not.”

I'm in my 60's. I live on the Mississippi River-have all of my life, and thanks to the NWS, I have lived through 3-500 year floods and a thousand year flood.

Don't try and tell me that average life expectancy hasn't increased.

This storm is unprecedented because I haven’t heard anyone blame it on climate change.

Katrina was a man-made disaster. Max rainfall from the storm in Louisiana was 10 to 12 inches. Nothing close to what is happening here. Had New Orleans had this amount of rain it may not be here today (probably a little over-stated).

Yes it is used that way. But when you say “Rain could last through the week” that means it will rain all week without stopping. Whereas, If you say “Rains could last through the week” it means that rain showers (notice the plural) could occur throughout the week.

English is hard, keep working on it.

Wow, you are so right, I guess we should all be cheering for when the next disaster comes along to clean out your neck of the woods /s. By the way, you know that Dennis Leary song, did he write it for you?

Are you for real, drunk or on drugs this afternoon?

I won’t sugar coat it. If you are not high on something you are a vicious, vengeful, hateful, unthinking zealous nut.

I detest the liberal mindset but wouldn’t stoop so low or put myself so high to declare a human disaster such as this a righteous act of God.

Give it a rest if you can. You can reply but I won’t read it.

“rains” used to be a reference to “the rainy season”. That usage has been enlarged to include how this article uses it.

> If you say “Rains could last through the week”

I would never say that.

>

“Rain could last through the week” means it will rain all week without stopping.

I would not make that assumption. You might, I wouldn’t.

killed between 6 and 12,000 people

So it might have been six people or it might have been 12,000 people or it might have been some number in between.

It’s not an assumption it’s the proper use of the word. Also, having spent over 60 years in CO, I have heard the weatermen and others say “snows could last through the week” (or something similar) thousands of times.

Maybe your English teacher was affirmative action.

The winter snows are coming.

"I would not have imagined such would be tolerated here."

Looks to me like it's getting the response it deserves. I for one would have called it out also, but why pile on when a vindictive ass, possibly a drunken one at that, has already been rebuked so eloquently by yourself and others?

I disagree. I think it is an improper, but recently popular, usage.
