GUADALUPE, Ariz. Although Joe Arpaio calls himself Americas Toughest Sheriff, a growing chorus of local critics want another title for him: Retired.
Sheriff Arpaio, the top law enforcement official in sprawling Maricopa County, is perhaps best known for his hard-nosed treatment of prisoners and his aggressive raids aimed at illegal immigrants. But it is his departments approach to more than 400 sex-crimes cases that has Sheriff Arpaio in trouble.
His deputies failed to investigate or conducted only the sketchiest of inquiries into hundreds of sex crimes between 2005 and 2007, investigations by Arizona law enforcement agencies have shown. Many of those cases involved molested children.
The cases were first raised by The East Valley Tribune in 2008 but resurfaced in the news media earlier this year and in a recent article by The Associated Press, which prompted Sheriff Arpaio to defend himself at a news conference. If there were any victims, I apologize to those victims, he said on Monday, vowing to hold deputies accountable.
But his grudging mea culpa only incited more outrage.
A sincere apology and acceptance of responsibility from Joe Arpaio to these victims would have been the professional and compassionate thing to do, Bill Louis, a former assistant chief of the El Mirage police, wrote Thursday in The Arizona Republic. But instead we once again witnessed Arpaios smug and defiant attitude this time directed towards the very victims he neglected.
Many of the cases originated in El Mirage, a working-class suburb of Phoenix, where the Police Department was disbanded in 2005 and the Sheriffs Department was called in to provide policing. But when the Police Department was reformed in 2007, officials discovered that dozens of sensitive cases, many filed by illegal immigrants, had not been adequately investigated or investigated at all.

This is all old news, old mud thrown at Sheriff Joe years ago by the La Raza-type maggots. The Slimes think this new volley of old cr@p will somehow lead to President Trump being removed from office.
Bwah hah hah let them throw their tantrums, nobody cares.

Why are you digging back 5 1/2 years for fake dirt?
Get it now?

Why did you go back to an article from 2011 and post today?
I’ve been seeing this story being circulated on twitter right now in response to Trump’s pardon. Even though its an old article I thought it would have been a relevant time as any to post.
If you have something to say then say it.
Posting an article over 5 years old is OK if you are an expert on that article and have information that can show where that piece is correct or complete bullshit.
You posted it. Now you get to defend it, Doctor.
If you think it is relevant to Trumps pardon of Sheriff Joe you must explain why?
FReepers will not do the work for you.
Just fair advice.
IMHO, Trump just did what he should have never needed to.
Sheriff Joe was the best thing since AC in Arizona.
I suspect that this really means is that Arpao hired hard-nosed detectives who gave short shrift to pampered princesses with “recovered memories” or teenagers who didn’t like the grades they got and accused their teachers, and focused instead on the bloodied and battered victims weeping in the emergency rooms.
Pretty much what I was thinking as well.
Apparently the Special Victims office under him went from 5 to 3 detectives and were snowed under. 400 cases received inadequate attention. This was a terrible business which was subsequently investigated. Here is one such case with linked documents:
http://www.azfamily.com/story/19662091/rape-victim-opens-up-about-botched-mcso-investigation
Since this is considered newsworthy now, apparently, it should be noted that nationwide there are hundreds of thousands of unprocessed rape kits with serial rapists running loose making life a misery for many women. Many of whom live in Democratic strongholds. I wonder how strong those strongholds would be if the Feds cracked down on this particular denial of justice?
I didn’t know much about Arpaio until recently, I mean I knew had the reputation of America’s toughest sheriff and his stance on illegal immigration which I can sympathise with.
It was in recent days I have been hearing all kinds of rhetoric from both sides really about Arpaio’s character, the sex crimes controversy being one of the most damning I’ve been hearing against him (with John Schindler calling him a miserable human being for it).
After reading the article I felt the need to know whether there was more to the whole story other than New York Times spin. Even though it was an old article I thought I post it on freerepublic to see if I could get just that from the comments.
Sheriff Arpaio is the embodiment of law enforcement.
Phoenix was being ravaged during my time there and he put a stop to it.
Obama got in in 2007 and personally attacked him.
Obama is scum from the dregs of the Earth. Be careful on your Sheriff Joe posts here on FR.
The man believes in the rule of law. Obama attacked him and President Trump stopped it.
Story over. (AZ 1985-1999)
What you will never see is true facts.
I lived those days through-out the southwest with a top clearance.
It wasn’t quite as bad because cell phones were not around and the internet was years away. I was a Bulletin Board myself.
The lying will never stop. Watch the hearings for Justice Thomas. Watch how they claim RR was an idiot.
The left has nothing but Communism to throw at you.
Good Luck
Would love to see Trump appoint him to the FBI, Asst. Dir. or as HHS director.
If Russia didn't pan out and racist calls aren't picking up steam, then let's try to paint Arpaio as an enabler of sex crimes. Not a big leap from there to "Trump is pro-sex crimes". Harvey will be blamed on him before the rain even stops.
If Arpaio was a democRAT, they would be sweeping this crap under the rug like everything else they do.
What gives the NYT the stupid idea that anyone who enters a jurisdiction by criminal means -- and who has less than zero right to be there -- should be protected by the laws of that jurisdiction?
This is an outdated article printed by a paper that hates Sheriff Joe.
