Hurricane Harvey Live Thread Part II
Various ^ | 8/26/2017 | Various

Posted on 08/26/2017 4:39:50 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with “a cargo trailer halfway in the building.” Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.

Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Looking for a good source where we can track cumulative precipitation totals in the TX Gulf coast area.

Prayers for the people of little Rockport, TX, that has been hardest hit with apparently major structural damage to several significant buildings. I hope injuries are minimal and that there was no loss of life.

But, all in all, it sounds as if the overall damage from hurricane winds and storm surge has been mercifully minimal, and this will be primarily a flooding event from very heavy rain. So, it’s far from over, this will be going on for some time as the rivers crest. Sounds a lot like Hurricane Floyd that hit NC.

I’m at the northern edge of Harvey, about 100 miles inland. The outer bands hit here a couple of hours ago. It’s still headed this way, but it’s expected to turn around and head east soon. We’ve had only an inch of rain so far with mild wind. We’re protected by a hill to the east which should keep the winds down. We’re along the Guadalupe river, which is the most flood prone river in the US, but it’s 400 feet elevation below this location. Lower elevations have to worry. Rockport has taken the brunt of the storm, and it’s a long distance away.

I have family in Austin......
.....they aren’t ‘too worried’ but monitoring
It’s the Hill Country.....but certain areas still flood easily

I’d imagine one shooting was less than a typical Friday night, myself. It’s odd that it would be included, unless it was a homeowner or property owner shooting an attempted looter.

This gives a lot of detail in the Houston area and the surrounding county. I looks to me that they are getting as much of the rain brunt the last few hours.

Odd for a shooting during a storm. They usually wait until heat and humidity set off tempers after the storm.

Another detail map. I change it to show participation and lengthen it to 24 hour totals and then zoom it to get more reporting stations detail.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?&zoom=8&scroll_zoom=true&center=27.829360859789794,-99.2449951171875&basemap=OpenStreetMap&boundaries=true,false,false&obs=true&obs_type=weather&elements=temp,wind,gust&obs_popup=true&obs_density=1

It is very awkward for Apple iOS but it may work okay for the DOS users.

Adding prayers to yours. Looks like the one "good" thing is that it seems to have a likelihood of not getting back over the Gulf. Might save millions others of the same tragedy.

My heart goes out to those who will have to deal with fully gutting their homes from flooding.
