Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport TX about 10:00PM CDT Friday night. Top sustained winds were 130mph. Rockport High School sustained heavy damage when a portion of the roof collapsed. A senior housing complex collapsed. The Rockport courthouse sustained major damage with a cargo trailer halfway in the building. Multiple tornadoes reported in the Houston/Galveston areas. There are reports of scattered structural fires and a shooting was reported in Corpus Christi. Residents along the San Bernard River were advised to evacuate and most TX Gulf coast counties are under flash flood watches.
Many locations are under a boil-water notice. Power outages are widespread. President Donald Trump promptly granted a Disaster Declaration to Texas Governor Greg Abbotts request. More than 700 members of the Texas Army and Air National Guards, Texas State Guard and the Texas Military Department have been activated and are positioning themselves throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Harvey and its anticipated landfall later this week. Ahead of the storm, FEMA sent supplies from its warehouse in Fort Worth to a staging point at Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio.

Thread I: Potentially Catastrophic Hurricane Harvey Approaches Texas Gulf Coast
6.25 inch per HR rates confirmed by Harris county rain fall net in the SE side
Wow. That is the one. Been dragging in for hours feeder bands from Gulf. More coming. Looks like we are finally getting some steering action. Northern bands getting peeled off. Hopefully we can kick it out east for Louisiana to handle. Lol. That feeder band does appear to be sliding eastward.
Yup. They said they've already opened the spillways on Lake Conroe (North of Houston).
Look out downstream on the San Jacinto river.
We maybe in the early hours of Katrina in one of the largest urban areas in America.
3 miles south of Hobby Airport
10 inches in 90 minutes
Hubby and I just said that. It’s like Katrina. The wind/surge damage in one spot, the major metro area flooded out of control somewhere else.
Been thinking of you that’s for sure! Vaughan hangs it with those strings! How cool.
Have to catch this thread and see if Jane’s feet are still dry Houston way. Been off line all day.
We had a deadly tornado outbreak here in Central Florida in 98 (maybe 97?). Over 40 died. I remember being glued to the tv because I was in the path. The weatherman had been pretty intense all evening but suddenly got very quiet, sober and dropped all showmanship. He was scared and worried and the difference was amazing.
God bless all in the storm’s way tonight.
Man, oh man. Hard to believe this.
Tornado warning Pasadena:
* Tornado Warning for...
Southeastern Harris County in southeastern Texas...
* until 1145 PM CDT.
* At 1120 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a
tornado was located over southwestern Pasadena, moving north at 15 mph.
And people were out and about and caught in it. I only lived in Houston a couple of times in my youth, but my parents lived there 17 years after I left for college, and the stories they told me about flooding would have been enough for me to stay home tonight. Heck, I am safely north of Austin with moderate rain all day and I ain’t going anywhere tonight. People are sometimes just too damn stupid and stubborn and ignorant of the place they live in. And ignore the clear information presented to them of the danger facing them down that day.
Actually, not really. I’ve lived in Houston. The rains there can be stupendous. And with a system like this to the west, they can be beyond stupendous - to the, where is the ark level.
That is beyond comprehension. I’ve witnessed five inches in an hour and that was like having a fire hose spraying directly down on you (flooded my car parked in the street).
Got out of Houston a few years back, this already looks worse than Allison and it's only day 1...
Short term models showing the two bands merging.
