Malaysia is a success story.
That's what they say. But most of the rebels or insurgents or Communists were ethnic Chinese and didn't get support from the ethnic Malays, so defeating them wasn't as difficult as winning in Vietnam would have been.

Absolutely correct. The alignment by some in the minority Chinese community (the envied commercial class in both countries) with 1950's-60's Maoism also happened in Indonesia, with genocidal results (see The Year of Living Dangerously). The native Malays have always dominated government, the military, and the streets. The offshore Chinese are sort of like the Jews of East Asia. Envied for their wealth and vulnerable to what amount to pogroms.
