The first shipment of U.S. anthracite coal to Ukraine is now heading from the U.S. port Baltimore, with a ceremony to mark the launch of the trade broadcast live on Facebook by the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States on Aug. 21.
Pennsylvania-based XCoal Energy and Resources signed a contract with Ukrainian state energy company Centerenergo on July 31, guaranteeing the provision of 700,000 tons of anthracite coal in the next few months. The deal followed talks by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenkos with U.S. President Donald J. Trumps administration in June.
The first shipment of 62,000 tons, which cost $113 per metric ton, is expected to arrive in Odesas Yuzhnyy port in three weeks, Voice of America reported.
Ukraine ambassador to the United States, Valeriy Chaly, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized the importance of this partnership for Ukraines energy security. Since the war with Russia broke out in 2014, Ukraine has sought alternative suppliers of coal for electricity generation.
Most of Ukraines anthracite coal, which is the only fuel that can be used by several of its power stations, used to come from parts of the Donbas that are now occupied by Russia.
Ukraine cut off deliveries of coal from the Russian-controlled territories in March, and has been struggling to meet its energy needs since then.
We appreciate our American friends support. Im proud that in the time of war our nations create jobs, create opportunities, Ambassador Chaly said.
However, XCoal spokesman Ted OBrien said that his company didnt view the agreement with Ukrainian government as a political deal.
For us, this is (just) a client who needs coal, he said, quoted by Voice of America.
Exports to Ukraine are part of Trumps broader energy policies, as he promised to revive the U.S. energy sector by boosting exports of coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) abroad, and create jobs for U.S. coal miners.
While Russia is building its Nord Stream II pipeline across the Baltic Sea to Germany, bypassing Ukrainian pipelines, the United States has said it will increase its exports of LNG to Europe.
This week Lithuania is to receive a first tanker with a delivery of LNG from the United States.
Woo-hoo! We’re making the lefties go insane. There’s one Trump trade deal signed.
More winning. MAGA. President Trump is doing it.
But, but, every financial TV-show I’ve seen the last couple of months say that coal is out. Renewables are in. But then I’ve read that Germany also imports US coal - Germany, the staunch defender of the Paris Accords!?!?
I get so confused.
Great
We’re exporting coal to Ukraine

What next? Ice cubes to Antarctica?
Yeah, that is a head scratcher.
The Ukraine has lots of coal already.
Much or most of those deposits are in areas under Russian control or occupation.
If you read the article, it tells you that the main area for coal mining was captured by the Russians, which is why they need our coal.
It takes 3 weeks to go from Baltimore to Ukraine? Damn.
What next? Ice cubes to Antarctica?Yea that would be stupid...But stupid on their part, brilliant on ours for selling them.
Sorry you don't get it.
Read the article? Who’d-a-thunk-it, aye!

MAGA, geopolitical leverage and jobs for the US
Go TRUMP
I think the LNG is an even bigger deal than shipping coal to the Ukraine. One of the reasons so much of western Europe are afraid to speak out or piss off Russia is because of their dependence on Russian natural gas. Take that dependence away and Russia’s influence is also taken away.
Trump win... MAGA
Shouldn’t it be cheaper to have Russia send them the coal by rail? They get wise, see the error of their ways, and then undercut us.
Outstanding next is natural gas and Ukraine can tell the ruskies to go pound sand....
Remember, this is war. The Ukrainian government does not recognize Russia’s right to Ukrainian’s sovereign territory.
Don't feel lonely, so do I :)
Thanks! :-)
