I explain it all in my new book, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Civil War, But Were Afraid to Ask.

November 6, 1860. Abraham Lincoln is elected president with anti-slavery support. Shortly thereafter, eleven southern, slave holding states secede from the United States to form the Confederate States of America. A war commences.

Janary 1, 1863. -- Lincoln frees the slaves.

April 9, 1865. -- U.S. General Grant accepts the surrender of the Confederate army from an unknown general.

April 14, 1865. -- President Lincoln is assassinated.

my new book

Is your book already in print or is there time to correct your mistakes?

Janary 1, 1863. -- Lincoln frees the slaves.

Lincoln did not free the slaves in 1863.

April 9, 1865. -- U.S. General Grant accepts the surrender of the Confederate army from an unknown general.

U.S. General Grant accepts the surrender of the Confederate army Army of Northern Virginia from an unknown general.

There were other Confederate armies with different generals surrendering at different times at different locations.
