When the Navy releases the track of the USS McCain, we can see how a steering malfunction caused the McCain to get in the way of other ships.

I also notice that most media are reporting the McCain was approaching the Strait of Malacca. The initial reports said the Mccain was headed to Singapore. Strait of Malacca is west of Singapore.

So they’re saying the McCain is a rudderless ship?

Thanks, but those paying attention have known that for years.

“””Some defense analysts have warned that longer deployments and less time and money for maintenance and training are a concern for the Navy. The crew of the USS John S. McCain had recently completed over 350 maintenance and repair jobs while at sea, at least 100 of which would usually be conducted at a ship yard. USS John S. McCain’s Repair Division conducts an average of 180 hours of preventative maintenance a week.”””

It appears the Navy is creating their list of excuses for these accidents. I have also seen comments complaining that Navy ships are now at sea for 3 weeks.

Compare Navy life to that of a Merchant Vessel Seaman. The Merchant Vessel Seaman is away from home 10 months and then gets two months vacation. While onboard a ship, there will likely be only 20 or so shipmates who steer the ship, do the repairs, and feed the crew.

We know our universities are riddled with snowflakes. Has our military also become a snowflake haven?

suffered a steering failure as she was beginning her approach into the Strait of Malacca

Well bad judgment and poor seamanship.

Steering control was apparently regained after the collision.

I wonder if this is like when the accelerator and the brake functions get reversed on a car and the little old lady drives through the plate glass window with her foot pressing hard on the brake pedal- but brake control is regained after the collision.

The admiral also said there were no signs of failure in the ship’s steering system or of a cyberattack, two possibilities that have been mentioned in news reports. But he noted that the investigation was in its earliest stages, saying, “We are not taking any consideration off ...

The jokes about a “Steering problem” in a ship named “McCain” write themselves.

Perhaps the vessel should have named the USS John McClane (he’d never steer you wrong)

And no one on deck could see the freighter? A CYA attempt yet again, as another crew joins the US Naval Crash of the Month Club.

Check out the Alnic MC tracking on this youtube beginning at the 1:45 mark. Lots of ships heading into Singapore and the Alnic MC was traveling under 12 knots.

I have it on good authority that the Navy brass is seriously freaked by these episodes.

While scuttlebutt isn’t worth warm spit, scuttlebutt is saying that strange, strange things are leading to these incidents. Computer/navigational weird things.

Whispers of Chinese chips doing more than they were intended for.

If this is the case, we will never hear about it.
