To your point, while America wasn't the first to abolish it, parts of America were. Our country was at the cutting edge of the abolitionist movement. Slavery had existed since the dawn of civilization, and American sought to end it. It ended in America before it ended in Spain, Brazil, Cuba, Egypt, and many others. Far from a national shame, it was part of our our historic struggle for libery.

The Confederate States of America are a part of our heritage. They are a part of the struggle.

Slavery has been around forever. Before Jamestown was settled, Europe had been in a thirty year war. That war created a terrible European economy with many poor. Thus we had indentured servants come to this land about ten years after Jamestown started in 1607. Slavery still exists when humans will do anything to escape the likes of Venezuela.
