Bannon brought this on himself by spreading the disinformation that McMaster had given Susan Rice security clearance, even though all he gave her was access to her own work product as was necessary, especially if she was going to soon be testifying.
You’re probably right. Trump probably got tired of the hysterical McMaster stuff from Breitbart. It just went on and on for weeks.
There is no evidence that this had anything to do with Susan Rice preparing to testify about anything. Instead, it appears to have been a routine move that at least in recent administrations has been done for former presidents and cabinet officials. Among the reasoning for it has been absent a clearance, it would be hard for the formal officials to even discuss their work and views with current officials.
So it was not some grand conspiracy to protect or promote Susan Rice. But the real issue to me was that the President has labelled Ms. Rice an abuser of intelligence who unmasked Trump associates for political purposes. If he really truly believes this, instead of just saying it for political bombast, then one would expect that ordinary protocols would have to be seriously examined in view of these extraordinary allegations. But to go on business as usual with her clearances implies that either the president did not take his own allegations seriously or, if he did, those under him did not.
This is a similar issue to the President happily going with chants of "lock her up" and saying he would investigate Hillary on Day 1, and then.... nothing. It leads one to wonder whether he believed what he was saying. But one hopes he does not throw serious accusations around without sincerely believing them.
