Condi Rice Destroys Liberals With a History Lesson About Slavery
The Political Insider ^ | 17 August 2017

If you didn’t see it, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice from the Bush Administration went on Fox News to promote her new book: “Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom.”

After what happened in Charlottesville, the topic is especially timely, which is why Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade immediately asked her an important question: “I want to talk about where your book starts, and that’s our Constitution. As an African-American woman, do you see yourself in this Constitution? Do you think that, when we look at nine of our first twelve presidents as slave owners, should we start taking their statues down and say, we’re embarrassed by you?”

Without hesitation, Rice fired back: “In a word, No.” She continued, “I am a firm believer in ‘keep your history before you.’ So I don’t actually want to rename things that were named for slave owners. I want us to have to look at those names, and realize what they did, and be able to tell our kids what they did and for them to have a sense of their own history.”

Then, she added, “When you start wiping out your history; sanitizing your history to make you feel better? It’s a bad thing.”

Rice noted the history in America where her ancestors were considered to be “three-fifths of a man” and a personal story about the horrible racism her father experienced in Birmingham, Alabama, in the Jim Crow South in 1952.

Then, she dropped the history lesson that liberals could learn from: “George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other slave owners were people of their times. What we should celebrate is that from the Jeffersons and the Washingtons as slave owners. Look at where we are now.”

This is a powerful and moving message from Rice, who is clearly not a fan of tearing down monuments. Liberals can’t be happy about this:(VIDEO)

Good for her. Brian probably tore into his producer after the show for inviting Dr. Rice. I’ll bet he was expecting a different answer.

Rice is exactly right to fight against the error of historical anachronism. You have to look at these historical figures as people of their time.

So whitey was so stupid that he didn't know that?

She "dropped" a one sentence "lesson" ?

Really?

Liberals already hate Condi Rice. When she was named SoS by Bush, the editorial cartoonists made her into a fat black Aunt Jemima.

No one objected to the racist slur.

I love Condi Rice. Thank you for the post. I’ve seen several of her posts lately on facebook in support of preserving the statues and monuments. I appreciate her perspective.

Exactly...I also bet the Bush rino camp isn’t happy as they hate Trump and are firmly in the coup camp.

The zeitgeist of their time was different. Few understand this. “Those who control the present, control the past and those who control the past control the future.” ― George Orwell, 1984

So tear down the past and replace it with what? What you will have is a new French revolution, not a new American one.

I give her credit for standing for the truth, but I'm tired of seeing the "three-fifths" nonsense repeated yet again. Condi Rice is certainly smart enough to know that what that was about was the North trying to minimize the political power of the South in reapportionment by diluting the effect of the slaves they held. Counting slaves in equal numbers to anyone else in the census would have handed the South the legislative representation to keep slavery going. The reason for counting them as less than a full person, which was just a statistical strategy, not a value statement, was to deny the South that power and thus to more quickly end slavery.

It's just so utterly disingenuous when liberals mention this as if it were intended to deny blacks their dignity by valuing them less than whites. It had nothing to do with that, and in fact was attempting to accomplish exactly the opposite.

She’s an idiot who doesn’t grasp the simple concept that the Constitution’s 3/5ths clause benefited slave interests. Slave owning states would have been delighted if slaves counted 2x for purposes on apportioning the House of Reps.

humblerunner, she dropped more than a 1 sentence history lesson. Watch the video and hear what she said after that line that was so conveniently left out of this post.

That was one of the most troublesome issues at the Constitutional Convention--whether to count the slaves in calculating the representation states would have in the House of Representatives. The northern states which had few or no slaves didn't want the slaves included at all, and feared that the three-fifths compromise would just encourage the southern states to keep importing more slaves.

In fact the 3/5 ratio went back to a deal made by the Confederation Congress over how to assess each state's tax contribution. It was estimated that the labor of 5 slaves was equivalent to the labor of 3 free persons. The slaves had no incentive to work well or work quickly (other than fear of punishment) and could be very ingenious at getting as little done as possible. John Adams once observed a group of 12 slaves working very inefficiently to get something done--apparently not grasping that they were doing so deliberately.

Thx, also sick of the stupidity about “3/5th”.

Notice the little heart earrings on Condi.
