Anti-lock brakes. Most likely the “skid marks” you saw from him going in reverse are burn marks from him trying to get away from the folks attacking him. I’ve watched some video of the event where he is rolling slowly down the street, his car is then attacked by folks with clubs and bats, he then guns it. I don’t believe he intended to run folks down. I believe from the video and pictures I’ve seen, that he got scared and tried to get away. He should be held accountable for his actions, but I also believe he’ll be sacrificed to left and required pay far more dearly than he should.
For that matter, more and more newer models come equipped with traction control (which sort of works opposite to anti-lock brakes). It prevents “burn-out” marks. If he left skid marks from his tires while accelerating in reverse, he either doesn’t have traction control, or he switched it off.
