I was recently looking for flights to Europe (Zagreb) for summer of next year. Lufthansa is still scheduling 747s for trans-Atlantic flights at that time.
I was looking for 787 flights and just happened across these Lufthansa flights. I flew a 747 twice (one contract flight and one time on Pan Am) when I was in the Air Force. It's like flying in your house. :^)
In all the years of flying (as a passenger) I never got one. A trip back from California was in a DC-10 - largest I’d ever been one. I was surprised when we parked next to an L-1011 how much bigger it was.
I can say as we were coming over the Rockies, they had to put the brakes on - so to speak. I was hanging in the seat belt. We must have been creeping up on somebody in front of us really fast. I don’t know if you can deploy the spoilers like that (I didn’t look out at the wing) or whether they just pulled the throttles way back. It felt like you were in a car and somebody was braking - hard. Never experienced anything like it.
One friend speculated we needed to lose a bit of altitude coming over the Rockies into Denver from L.A. and that they deployed the spoilers to achieve that effect. I had come in from L.A. at least once or twice before and never experienced that but I wasn’t in a DC-10 those other times.
