“Student” is singular. “They” and “their” are plural.

At Catholic University 25 years sgo, we were required to use “inclusive language.” I quickly trained myself never to begin a sentence with pronouns like “someone,” “anyone,” etc., so the issue of him/her/it/they/them would not arise. I think it would have been hard for anyone to tell whether I was using “inclusive language” or not.
I have always called “inclusive language” Lesbonics.
