Apologies for the size of the image, but I had no luck trying to shrink it.

The graph above came to my attention via the op-ed page of the dead-tree version of The Wall Street Journal today. That article, How Trump Won, in Two Dimensions, (by F. W. Buckley) is behind a paywall, the source of this graph isn’t.

The source article describes the methodology behind the graph; my rough take on it is that the horizontal axis is the conventional economic left-right political axis, but the vertical axis attempts to quantify “social issues” - but basically, IMHO, maps from anti-Christian at the bottom to pro-Christian at the top. Two things stand out:

  1. In economic terms this is not a right wing country, and any other candidate in the Republican field but Trump would have lost. And,

  2. It’s easy to see how Hillary might have “known for sure” that Access Hollywood stuff and women following it up with claims of sexual harassment against Trump would have sunk his candidacy.

Hillary’s economic leftism made her a “shoo-in” against an economic rightist - but that was Trumped by her hostility - shared by a shocking number of Americans - to Christianity. And Trump is not an economic conservative. At least, not a conventional one. Trump won because Democrats BOO GOD At Convention didn’t sell in the “blue wall” states.

The county-by-county map showing Red counties vs. Blue counties would disagree with your conclusion. The vast majority of this country is not progressive/marxist, and therefore, not Democrat.

off the top, I’d say GEOGRAPHICALLY, we’re a right-wing country, but, demographically, not. Lucky for us, the progs are clustered in small geographic enclaves, but there are more of them.

And Trump does not fit preexisting definitions, which is why he succeeded and why he is fiercely both hated and supported.

That graph is apparently only based on Economic Conservatism or Liberalism.

What is shows is that Hillary had captured the hard Left, and Trump had captured the middle class.

Wealthy Elitists were apparently sitting on their hands and pouting that they weren’t able to vote for Jeb!

Precisely. There have been 3D versions of the red/blue map constructed, and they dramatically illustrate how very many people are concentrated in the geographically small “blue” areas.

Yes.

So much for the media’s “right wing extremists elected Trump” mantra.

Yes, you are right. Shows that Trump voters while very conservative socially are actually right down the middle economically. Wow.

. . . which means we gotta educate about the fact that socialism and progress are polar opposites.
