This guy would still just have his %ick in his hand if Ted’s brother hadn’t sent him Ted’s writings.

Profiling isn’t about catching anyone directly. It’s about winnowing the field, deciding which tip offs could actually be the culprit, which people to interview. Lots of people thought their brother/ neighbor/ friend/ enemy might be the bomber. But only one was right, and only some of those even deserved scrutiny, how do you know which ones to follow up on? Profiling.

The FBI profiling that was released publicly at the time was laughably wrong— did not match the publicly known facts. It only demonstrated that the FBI profilers were idiots.

In a parallel universe the Unabomber’s brother would have recognized the writing of the Manifesto and call the FBI to inform them that he thinks the author was...Al Gore.

It sounds impossible for landlines to cross over on to cell line

You are probably correct. It was more likely the multiplexing equipment that allows multiple conversations to go on a single line or frequency that caused the problem. If the multiplexer at one end is not properly synchronized with the multiplexer on the other end, "ghost talk" can occur.

They have a good documentary on Netflix about that. If the newspapers hadn’t published his manifesto the FBI would still be looking for this guy. His brother and sister-in-law recognized his similar rants from the letters he sent them and the manifesto and then contacted the feds who compared the writing styles.

Did Al Gore say it? Or was it the Unabomber?

It may be more difficult to decide than you think.

http://www.crm114.com/algore/quiz.html

Each quote below is either from Al Gore’s Book Earth in the Balance or from the Unabomber’s Manifesto.

After each quote choose either Gore or Unabomber. At the end hit the Grade Me button and the quiz will be graded and you can view the correct answers. You will also have the opportunity to view the documentation. To be fair, I should point out that while Al and the Unabomber identify the “problems” similarly, they part on the solution. Al wants a “Global Marshall Plan” with enforcement across national boundaries while the Unabomber prefers the idea of revolution.

I got the idea for the test, by the way, from a column by Tony Snow.

Tony Snow was a noted media personality and sometime FReeper who unfortunately died of cancer some years ago.

I thought the big break came when TK’s brother fingered him.

I watched some of the previews and in upcoming episodes there will be a Janet Reno who looks like she went on the Weight Watchers program.

Exactly. The brother called the FBI the day the Manifesto was printed in the Times.

This is all silliness.

If the WP had not published Ted’s manifesto, the brother would have never read the manifesto.

Yeah, Unibomber’s brother recognized an inverted phrase that Unibomber liked to use “You can eat your cake and have it too”.

Historical accuracy aside, it’s refreshing to watch a series without foul language and the characters jumping in the sack willy-nilly. (At least through 3 episodes).

And I can and have cursed like a longshoreman on occasion ;)

I watch true crime shows on the ID channel all the time and they often portray their use of profilers. I am always amazed at how many mundane details the profiler ends up getting right.

Maybe it took so long because Merrick Garland was the chief investigator on the Unabomber case? So I just read...

“I’ve never said this publicly, but I’ll just tell you right now because it just sickens me to watch and listen to Merrick Garland, because Merrick Garland was in charge of the prosecution at DOJ of the Unabomber,” Turchie said. “And I have to tell you something: He would not recommend to the AG that our search warrant to get into Theodore Kaczynski’s cabin be approved.”
